Re: Let's see your cages! (From May 2015)
Scoobywoo. Syrians may not use a sand bath like dwarfs do, but they may use it as their toilet. It maybe a good idea to put it on the ground level so when the hamster comes out of their nest they can use it as the toilet.
A corner toilet pan may work better in the long run, as often my Syrians would back into a corner and raise their tail high to pee. The pee missed the tray I had put in, until I changed it.

Thanks CMB, we have moved the sand bath onto the ground floor under the big ramp- I had wanted it on the ground floor originally but couldn't work out where to put it.
We have got a corner litter tray ready to put into the cage once we work out where hammy likes to go to the toilet. It's currently under the table in the big red boxes with all the other hamster bits and bobs.

Is this forage?
Is it suitable for Syrians?

Anyone know of somewhere in the UK that makes similar platforms etc?

The cage is made out of 2 of the smaller IKEA Lack Coffee tables stacked on top of eachother & some plexi-glass.
The platforms were custom made from a company in the US called Twilight Chinchillas. She makes custom made toys, treats and furniture for small animals.

Re: Let's see your cages! (From May 2015)
Panda baby - I think the natural set up is quite a tricky thing to achieve. Personally I wouldn't use hay or hanging ladders - I'm quite cautious about spiky things poking in hamsters eyes, and fall risks. But some people know their hamsters and different things work for different people.
Generally I'd say - keep it simple and safe. Hamsters don't need hay, and plain white torn up toilet paper is safe, cheap nesting material. Plus there are plenty of good, safe substrates to use. I wouldn't use anything hung by chains either as hammies can get their feet caught.
If you like the natural set ups there are a lot of examples on the forum in various places and on German forums - using cork logs for example, but standard substrate and nesting material.
As for the platforms - I think it's a US company. Lots of people make diy platforms or there are some you can buy.
