Hamster heaven for a robo
So for my last two Syrians I used a hamster heaven and it was great. A few weeks ago I adopted a robo and he came with a cage - though it had lots of toys it wasn't huge and I would like to upgrade him to a larger cage. Now that he seems to have settled in nicely I think I should do it soon. Would a hamster heaven be okay or could he get through the bars? He is now 9 months old so fully grown.

Re: Hamster heaven for a robo
It`s debatable Dusty regarding the bar spacing. An adult robo could still try and get out through bars if determined enough. I would house a robo in a Zoozone 1 tank to be absolutely safe. Anything bigger is better, but the ZZ1 is a nice size for a robo. I kept my last two (separately) in my Gabber Rex tank which now houses my Russian hybrid. I don`t even need the grill on!
Narrow barred cages like the Ferplast Kios would also be a good choice, but remember too that robos might try and climb bars and even though these cages are not `tall`, they could still pose a problem if a robo started to climb the bars. They are primarily ground dwelling hamsters and have long speedy back legs, but they are cheeky monkeys and no doubt would see the bars as a challenge! x

Re: Hamster heaven for a robo
That first video is frightening. Just imagine if that wee hamster had got stuck there and the owner was out? It would be half dead by the time the owner came in and found it dangling. This is why I don`t like barred cages with more than 7mm bars. They are made for mice and dwarf hamsters. Anything that isn`t shouldn`t be risked in my honest opinion. x

Understood guys! Those hamsters are amazing escape artists. I will maybe look at eBay and gumtree to see if I can get a good deal on a tank like cage

Re: Hamster heaven for a robo
I used to use barred cages when I kept mice and back then I knew about the dangers of wider bar spacing even for mice. My cage at the time had 1cm bar spacing and although my mice happily stayed inside, I took a risk. Nowadays I would keep mice in a Zoozone or a narrow barred cage rather than risk escapes or them becoming trapped. Hamsters don`t have the same good climbing abilities as mice, but from that video footage, they don`t seem to care about their own safety! x

They do get very single minded. I suspect that first guy would have dropped back down when he tired enough. Still not a great result. You can't be too careful though. X
