Ha! Me and plants?! I don't think so

I've put it in my cupboard as a storage box for all Rupert's spare toys etc! I'll get round to putting it on eBay at some point, or see if the local rescue wants it incase they can make use of it at all. x

Tanks are useful for fish and small crustations so a rescue centre may be greatful for it. Or ebay of course! x

Why should cages be 40cm high?

Rupert's cage (Maxi Duna) isn't even that tall!

Hmm, ok. So the tank is 10cm less in both width and length than the advised guidelines. With a level added to the tank that is 40cm x 20cm - is that missing 10cm really so much of a big deal?

I know that the guidelines on cage size relate to single floor space, not including levels but still...

It's all down to personal opinions when it comes to it really but I think once you start to go below the generally recommended size even 10cm can make a big difference tbh.
As for height I don't think there is a recommendation, not that I'm aware of anyway, just so long as there's room for plenty of substrate & enough room to get a good size wheel in!

Height doesn`t matter to hamsters as they are not mice! As cypher said, it comes down to whether you feel the tank is adequate with a shelf and a good wheel added and other factors like play times in a safe run. Tanks can also have vaulted roofs made from wood and mesh if a good DIY job is done to make a second floor say for a Chinese hamster as they are the best climbers of the hamster species. A wee robo wouldn`t want that though as robos are diggers and runners! x

Well I emailed a rescue in the area to see if they wanted the tank last night and they replied first thing this morning saying yes please, so I guess that is the decision made! Taking it over there later with the spare wheel and the other bits... and have some stuff I don't use for my dog anymore either so they'll get a big bundle of stuff which hopefully they can make good use of.

That`s very kind of you barley, I`m sure they will make good use of it for a needy rodent or fish. It will also take things off your mind too regarding the tank size, "should I, shouldn`t I" use it!

No doubt if a hamster AND cage became free near you it would be a chance to have a wee rescue dwarf hammy. Well done. x

If you search online the minimum size is what i stated, in the UK. In my opinion that's still too small (especially for a Syrian) the height allows deep substrate which i think should be given to them to allow natural behaviors. I feel it needs to be deep enough to allow them to make a burrow. My Syrian, Winston made a burrow once and i was so proud of him and it made me feel so happy how he's actually being a proper hamster
