Part time cage?!
Hey guys, I'm rehomeing a Syrian hamster either today or tomorrow that someone doesn't want anymore in my area, for obvious reasons I'm keeping her in a seperate cage from my male Syrian, the only problem being she comes with a typical pet store bar cage, would she be okay in this for a couple weeks while she settles in until I can get her a bin cage?

Re: Part time cage?!
It depends on the hamster really. If she`s not going mad bar chewing and seems nervous, I would keep her in her cage for a few days until you can assess her. If the cage is terrible, then yes, switch her over to something more spacious. Just remember to take some of the old substrate/bedding even if it smells a bit and place this into the new cage. This does help keep things familiar as hamsters use their scent to feel secure.
If you plan on keeping her rather than rehoming, looking for a second hand Syrian-sized cage would be a good idea. Bin cages are okay if they are configured in a way that means meshing the front and the lid, otherwise they can feel very enclosed. Some hamsters don`t like feeling trapped inside four tall walls, which is what a Bin cage creates when you think about it. x

She comes with everything, including bedding, food, toys ect so everything's familiar, the cage does look like one of the bigger hamster cages, I'll see how she's acting once she's been here a few days, the bin cages I use don't have a mesh top, I buy ones tall enough so they can't climb out, even after climbing on toys and hide outs, I'll be able to buy a new cage at the end of month once my money's gone in, thank you!

That is so nice to hear, that there are people who really care about other hammies as well as their own!
Good luck with finding a right home for your ham... In a meantime, enjoy fostering!

Yay, good work giving a hammy a better life!
Maybe reading too much into it but I just want to be sure that you do know that hamsters can't be kept together even if she was the same sex as your current ham? Just the fact that you said it was because they were male and female seemed to imply that you might otherwise have put them together...

Nono! I know only certain dwarf species can be put together! I didn't even realise it seemed like that haha! Thank you for the concern

Re: Part time cage?!
And those certain species of dwarf hamster shouldn`t be mated either as it results in a hybrid. Winter Whites and Campbell`s dwarf hamsters and hybrids are already bred and this has resulted in more hybrids which saturate the pet trade these days. x
