Question Critters Choice 3 Tier Rodent Habitat ?

Hi everybody, I have a spare 3 tier X Large Critters Choice rodent tank. I've had it stored away for a while and since the passing of my lovely Syrian, Cruella. I'm looking to possibly get another hamster but a dwarf variety.

Is this tank suitable for the dwarf species? More specifically I'm looking to adopt one possibly from the adoption bits in a pets at home, rather than buy one from there (I despise buying pets from pets at home), but I would gladly adopt one from their 'rescue' bit if it gets a hammy free from there! Ideally looking to rescue a solitary dwarf species rather than a pair, although I would take a pair if there was a pair that needed a home together.

Thanks for the info

Do you have an image of the cage? I think I know the one you mean but can`t be sure. If it`s a multi-storey cage, sometimes the tubes going up to the floors can prove troublesome for a dwarf hamster as they have furry feet and find descending and climbing up vertical tubes difficult. If the tubes can be lowered to make getting up and down easier, then it would be fine, but I would check this first.

Adopting a dwarf hamster from pets At Home or from Gumtree is really rewarding. My latest Russian hybrid is from there. handed back because of his `attitude`, apparently fell out with his cage mate.

As for getting two, a multi-storey cage would not be suitable as a pair can fight over territory or sudden change, so I would go for one solitary hamster. Keeping an eye on a pair of dwarf hamsters can be a task and a half, so it`s much safer just to keep one. x

I realised it was the glass one after I`d posted earlier! Yes, that would be fine for a Russian dwarf or a Chinese, although I`m not keen on the cornered glass triangular shelving or glass tanks in general, preferring the Perspex ones like the Zoozones. A Roborovski may find clambering up there difficult as they are better on the ground floor rather than climbers. The sliding grill, does it make a noise when it`s slid open? x

I've had a zoozone 2 before but the constant chewing on the plastic was stopping me sleeping so I sold it on, if I had been in my own home I would of kept it and put it in a different room as it was and still is my favourite hammy home, for Syrians anyway ^_^.

The lid lifts off and because the clips in mine are a bit worn they make no noise at all lol.

I've had two of these but never used for hamsters (one used for a gerbil, another, in my garage).

If you do plan on having it for hammies, make sure you do only get one, as they go get territorial over levels when living in a pair.

Personally I found them a real pain to clean, and heavier than I thought, so it was quite awkward to get it all done.

You would also need to make some sort of step up to the levels as a dwarf hamster would find it hard.

The benefit of this, is that you can have a really deep substrate, great for hamsters that like to dig. When I used one for a single gerbil I also used different substrates on the different levels, e.g. one had sand on it.

I originally bought it for a gerbil I had a while back, I also used to put sand down on it. I don't mind the cleaning part of it, i never found it too much bother. I'm going to take it work tomorrow as I work with cats so we have really good sanitisers that I make sure its 100% free of anything nasty.

It`s good that the mesh lifts up rather than slides. It could be made to work for a dwarf hamster though with some thought to the shelving being easily accessed. Good luck with it. x
