You could create a dig box out of a small plastic tank or tub to give you the extra substrate depth in at least one part of your cage, if you don't have a deep enough base. I have Cleo in a tank so not an issue with that but I still have less substrate where her wheel etc is & then deeper everywhere else to compensate for the lack of height.

Thanks Velma - actually that's an option too - just get an Alexander cage and have a separate dig box.

Thanks Steph! Yes I came across them on ebay - they would make a custom tank with a lid - not sure if they would be able to deliver though. They quoted £110 without delivery so have that on back burner - I wasn't sure how good quality the tanks were as have heard of aquariums breaking. The detolf sounds best as it is toughened glass, but don't have room for one sadly.

Sorry had to do an urgent dog-walk
I agree it's a shame that Falco only has a top opening. One of the reasons I like the Exo is the wide opening front doors. I was going to suggest custom too-- If you google there seems to be a surprising market in custom. I can't vouch for any of them though.

Yes I like the Exo too! Just want it higher! I kind of added up - if I had 30cm substrate, need 60cm height.

I'm just being indecisive really - there are tank with lid options available (Silver also mentioned Custom Aquaria) and then there's the Karat which is more like a cage but not such a deep base. I think maybe that might be the way to go as Charlie is used to a cage - but then he might prefer a tank! Just don't know. Knowing my luck I'd give him 30 cm of substrate and he wouldn't bother digging lol! He has been in a whole bag of substrate before and just wanted to climb out.

How EXCITiNG!! Shopping for a new cage, for Charlie.
I know each hamster differs, however, Teddie my female Syrian, has been in both barred and glass habitats.. She prevents glass over barred. I think it's due to the " enclosed" feeling, and the outside sounds are not as evident in a glass cage. She did dig a bit up to a year old, now she's 14 months old, and prefers to run on her wheel, and climb up and down on ledges, mostly.

Can't wait to see what you decide on.. SO many choices!!.

As you know Ebony chewed through her alexander base so we made a wooden liner so she couldn't escape, it's higher than the plastic base, her platforms are higher than the wooden liner, her wonderland is in the middle of the cage so the substrate can't be deep there, the leif house is under one of the platforms which leaves all the space under the other platform with the additional height of her wooden liner for deep substrate, this works well for Ebony so I'm wondering if you could get away with no DIY skills at all on the Alexander, you could raise one platform to the height you wanted it to be and just put either some wood, or polycarbonate, (because that cuts much easier than plexiglass), or even cardboard against the bars under the platform and fill that area right up with substrate to dig in?

If you have space, when you do his next cage set up could you, could you jiggle around some stuff & try a dig box to see if he likes it? Might give you an idea how he feels about it. I like a tank style as no mess but it does limit you as there is no front access & no where to clip anything. The kerry is okay as it has the lid is barred so can hang stuff but if to get a mesh then that might not work. Just to give you extra confusing decisions!

The Mamble, have you considered that?
I'd never seen one until Cypher posted pictures of Zephyrs new one, hers looks totally amazing and is full of substrate it's a 100cm base but I think it's taller than the Alexander and with a flat top which is what your looking for
