Default Temporary Cage

Hey guys,

I know I haven't been on for a long time but there were many things happening and I simply didn't have the time.

Due to the strong winds in the North of Scotland about 2/3weeks ago, our house was very badly damaged. The total repair cost is about £15,000. Plus there were other things that needed repairing not because of the wind £19,000. So

So my dad decided that instead of repairing this house, we just bought a new one and sold this one very cheaply. But because of that I have to keep my hamsters in my bedroom.

My cages are 110cm by 50cm. There's 2 of them. Each charge is 2 bin cages joined together by a tube.

The cages simply don't fit in my bedroom and there's nowhere in the house where I could put them. So my dad said I have to make the cages smaller by disconnecting one of the bin cage from each cage. But this will be only 43x50 which is nowhere near the recommended RSPCA size. So he said that I have to disconnect them today (Sunday) and add a level, and if then I don't like it he will pay half for the new cages. Hence my thread in the marketplace. The limit is £80 for 2 cages.

Will the hamsters be OK in such a small space for max of about 2weeks. Maybe 2 and a half. I'm worried because they obviously got stressed when moving house.

Also please take a look on my thread in the marketplace. I am willing to pay £40 for a cage and that includes the postage. No longer than 80 cm long.

Thanks

Hi dave, so sorry to hear about your house, but the main thing is your making plans for your hamsters so try not to worry about reducing their footprint under the circumstances. Look on Gumtree and other similar sites in your location and hopefully you might be lucky and find a cage or two that way or through the forum.

Look online too as there are cages around the £40 or less mark that would be good cages. The Zoozone 1 tanks for example if you want non-barred caging.

The duna multy is similar to the zoozone & costs about £40 each. Good robo tank. Or get some larger bin cages & put in side ventilation rather than in the lid so you can stack them? And for a couple of weeks I think your robos will be fine in their smaller bins. Especially as it is already part of their cage so you're only removing something not changing their environment completely only to change it again when you get new cages.

Thanks, unfortunately on Gumtree there are only tiny crap cages.

I never considered the zoo zone 1 cage. I will have a look into the cage more deeply.

If your hamsters are Syrian's then you could potentially look at the smaller Mamble cage which is 80cmx50cmx43.5cm (bar spacing 1cm) for £39.99 incl delivery (Rat Cages : Mamble Rat / Hamster Narrow Bar 80cm Cage : www.LittlePetWarehouse.co.uk - The UK's Small Pet Specialists - The place to buy amazing products for your pet online). The doors are on the front so you should be able to stack them on top of each other. You could look at the bigger Mamble 100 cage which goes for £49.99 if you feel your budget can stretch that far but remember because it's so high you will need to spend even more on shelves/hammocks to make the height safe. Another option is the Grosvenor cage which is smaller 78cmx48cmx36cm for £41,99 incl delivery (Rat Cages : The Grosvenor Large Rat and Hamster Cage with Shelf : www.LittlePetWarehouse.co.uk - The UK's Small Pet Specialists - The place to buy amazing products for your pet online). Although with this one the door is on the top, a nice big one actually which makes access really good but because it's on top you won't be able to stack them.

Another option, particularly if your hamsters are one of the smaller species, is to buy a simple rabbit/guinea pig cage and then buy some wire mesh and attach the mesh with zip ties. Below is a good example what I'm talking about: (I got this off the internet so I hope the person it belongs to doesn't mind - if so let me know and I'll remove it). You could get a simple 100cmx54cmx44cm cage from Zooplus (Great Bargains on Cages at zooplus: Piggy Basic Rabbit Cage) and then mesh it. You will get a good sized cage and still be well within your budget. The one in the link has both a top door and smaller front door so you could stack them.

Another option is also the Alaska cage 84cmx48.5cmx44cm (Alaska Hamster Cage | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!). The bar spacing is narrow and should be good for both Syrians and smaller hamsters and is within budget.

Honestly though if there is any chance your Dad could stretch to £50 per cage (maybe you could come up with the extra somehow?) I would go for the Barney cage (Barney Pet Cage | Great deals at zooplus!). It's 100cmx54cmx45cm and the bar spacing is very narrow so good for any type of hamster. It has both top doors and front doors so can be stacked and comes with shelving. They would be good versatile cages for the long term.

Good luck! I hope my long ramble was helpful . Let us know what you decide on in the end .

Thank you for all that information. I like the Grosvenor cage with the wooden shelf. I used to own a Alaska before for my Syrian Cookie (R.I.P) and it was really good. My hamsters are roborovskis. Nearly 1 year old.

I will sure let you guys know what I decide.

I bought a Grosvenor as a temporary cage, its very good for the money. As stated there's no side door so I'm going to fit one from another cage

Hi Dave, sorry to hear about your house troubles.
Those gales were hellish at my bit but, I know the highlands got it so much worse.
Didn't the insurance cover the storm damage?
You mentioned that the hamsters will only be in a small place for a couple of weeks, how come?

Normally the insurance covers the damage costs, but because repairs done before the storm were not done by professionals the wind damage was higher that it would be if the house was repaired by qualified people.

Today I disconnected the cages so each hamster lives in 1 bin cage instead of 2 joined. This is temporary till I buy normal sized cages
