What is your favorite bedding to put in your hamster's cage?

I usually use CritterCare bedding for my ham and it's really nice, but I've heard that Aspen shavings are one of the best substrates you can give them. Has anyone used it? Would you recommend this product? Planet Petco Aspen Wood Bedding for Small Animals - Pet Substrate from petco.com

Aspen is very popular among lots of forum members. It's one of the cheapest options, and is safe for hams.

I personally prefer paper bedding though. Kaytee clean and cosy is my favorite, as it's softer and less dusty than other paper-based beddings like carefresh and crittercare. I prefer it over wood because my hams can use it as nesting material, and it doesn't have splinters like shavings sometimes do

I use kiln dried and filtered Pine bedding which comes in a huge bale for only $5.00 a bale.
For my LH Hamsters I use Yesterdays News Cat litter as their coats stay mat free and they all get 10 sheets of Toilet paper to build a nice soft tangle free nest.

I used to give white paper towel to use for their nest but I had a youngster ingest the paper towel and die from and impacted intestine so now it's only bio degradable toilet paper for all.

Right now I've got care fresh Ultra with baking soda, it's really soft,
super absorbent, and I never smell his urine. Because it's white, I can automatically spot where he's urinated or gone poo, and remove it. Only downside is a sort of stale popcorn smell to the bedding , but that quickly airs out... I'm sure it's the baking soda.

I also have a bag of the Carefresh Premium soft small pet bedding... It really is
SUPER soft.... super absorbent, and has great odor control... it's awesome for the softest, coziest nests... and for hammies with very sensitive skin that's easily torn, or sore , or balding. Downside is, like with most paper bedding.. it'll get caught on a Long Haired Syrian's skirt, but it's not a big deal if you comb your hamster's fur a few times a week to keep it tangle and mat - free

I also grab scissors and cut squares of soft toilet tissue into wide strips and put
a lot in his cardboard house ( because he does A LOT of his peeing in there) , and I put some in his hay hut, under both his bend-a-bridges , and under the huge DIY climbing frame/ hideout I built.
I've tried All Living Things paper bedding, and it literally feels like super thin and short strips of paper... not soft at all, not absorbent at all, and so of course, it did no good for all the urine odor. blech.

I use Fitch, it's a paper bedding like Carefresh but much cheaper as you buy it in huge bales. I still add some Carefresh for colour every now and then.. but mostly because I have a bag left over! Carefresh is good though, I love confetti for the bright colours!

Fitch is a lovely white bedding, super soft and nice chunky pieces. Hamsters love to dig in it! Pikachu never made an outside-her-house nest until I gave her Fitch and ripped up toilet rolls!

You can buy it there, on Ebay or on Amazon. I know it's not sold much in USA but I'm suggesting it on the off chance that shipping from Ebay or Amazon isn't too expensive! If not I would say stick with what you know or Carefresh, I personally find wood bedding to have a strong odor and with Pikachu in my room I don't like that haha.

I find my hamster loves to have a selection of different beddings in at once
I do half fitch and half aspen.
