Default Aquarium Advice

So Ted is a chewer!! He's going at his Alaska cage pretty hard... and his ball.

Not the carrot shaped chew block though, obviously

He's also a climber as the top of the Alaska is a long way to fall! He's got lots os substrate to fall on but seems to choose to fall on the wooden bits of his cage! He's unhurt but obviously I'm worried.

I think I'd like an aquarium / tank cage but looking for advice.

I've seen this at Zooplus Hamster Cages: great selection at zooplus: Small Pet Terrarium Kerry but it's a little more than I really wanted to spend, does anyone have it? What's the access like. One of the best things about the Alaska is the large front door, I know I'll miss that.

What about a fish tank coverted? I'd have to change the lid right?

I love using fish tanks for small critters and have done so for years! When I was younger and really into gerbils they were fantastic for holding the extra deep bedding that they needed for burrowing. I especially like them for dwarf hamsters/robos because their hyperactive antics are better viewed through the glass

ETA: Plus if you can find a secondhand tank they're usually a LOT cheaper than new

Both my hams are kept in glass tanks, and I can't recommend them enough many of them come with mesh lids, which are perfect for hamsters. Some come with those weird glass lids for fish, which will need to be replaced with a mesh lid. If you can't find one that fits, it's not very difficult to make one out of wire mesh and wood slats

Sometimes local Petshops have unused fish tanks, you could maybe check around and see if you can get a good deal.

Thank you for the advice, we're going to look at tanks at the weekend! I'm going to research ways to put levels and everything in!

Around this time of year, a lot of people are getting rid of their old aquariums either because they got new aquariums for Christmas or they've started spring cleaning.

I highly recommend you look for a used aquarium. I got one from Craigslist (I live in California) and this guy sold me a 36" x 18" aquarium for $25, which I think is an amazing deal. That's like 80% off what these things usually cost.
