My ikea cage plans!
I'm planning to get a 5x5 ikea expedit (or something similar that's big enough) and turn it into 2 hamster cages
I'm wondering if anyone knows how to add ventilation to one with glass walls? If I can't afford glass or find any way to add ventilation I'm going to have to get chickenwire instead - which means finding some very strong stuff with small squares, because I'm getting a robo and from past experience Syrians are master wire chewers :P
Also, would it be a good idea to have multiple floors for each cage? I was thinking of giving them each a second floor to put their hose in and for and a little more space but I've heard that they don't like them.
Also, these will be 2 SEPERATE cages, I promise that my 2 hamsters will never even meet eachother

Multiple floors can be fine, most of our hams have and like shelves, just make sure there're no big drops for anyone to fall down
As far as ventillation goes, what about meshing the back or sides?

Meshing the back would work! I'll probably use some stairs and make a cover for them or some diagonal tunnels so my hammies won't get hurt.

Well if you do use mesh, is there a way that you could only mesh an area that the hamsters would not be able to reach to avoid biting? That is what I did and even with the one that they can reach they seem to ignore it. Or even just doing the lid would be enough ventilation for them.

Rodipet have these excellent platforms (scroll down to bottom of page - the top ones are wheel stands), but they're a bit expensive. Between £11 and £15 - price quoted in euros. But they come with a ladder and their postage is quite reasonable. Peanut has one in her eco tank thing.

As for meshing - I'd suggest 6mm mouse mesh which nothing can get in or out of!

Hi Kitto Kitty, you can get custom perforated glass but it can be very pricey, but if you can afford it then why not?
On my 4x4 expedit cage I have a plexiglass back with vents attached like the ones you see on vivariums or terrariums:

That's an awesome cage Seeing as I'm getting it for Christmas and I have quite a bit of my own money to put towards it, I'll probably be able to afford it
Not sure how I'd make it open yet, though

You can do sliding glass doors, it's super easy to do, can design it so the glass pops out for easy cleaning, I have a YouTube video on how I built my cage which might help you out? I can PM it to you if your interested, I will do my best to help if you get stuck on something

I have alot of time to save up, as I'm moving in summer so they're going to be having bin cages until then
