Connecting tank to bin cage
Hello everyone.
I got my very first hamster 2 months back. He is a long haired syrian. I made and attached two bin cages for him. After about a month I noticed that there might not be enough running space so I ordered for a 150cm× 50cm× 45cm tank for him.
I live in a country which does not sell many hamster accessories and no tubes/tunnels what so ever. My question is: how can I connect the tank to the bin cage? I want to give maximum space to Bilbo. I want to use one tub as burrowing box and the second as some sort of garden. Also, Mauritian summer is very hot so im guessing, because of the meshed windows, the bin cage will be cooler for him.
Thank you for reading and answering.

Re: Connecting tank to bin cage
Do you have a hardware shop near you. Cages can be connected by drainpipe tubes or waste water pipes, the sort under the sink. Depends what size diameter tube you want. The hole could be cut and the tubed drilled and jeld in place with either cable ties, wire or glued. If you have a soldering iron, you could put a tube in the hole as long as there are no gaps around the tube and heat the end of the tube and flare it out on the inside of the cage and use either gaffer tape or hot melt glue on the outside. Plumbers shops have connectors for joining tubes or drainpipes too.
Hope this has given you an idea.

Thanks Ian. Just a question though: can hamsters go up and down straight, smooth drainpipes?

No. They need a fairly rough surface to grip to. They would be able to go up a 'drain pipe' at an angle but not too steep that they slide on it. You could make a ladder for him to climb or if you can get mesh, make a mesh tube for him to climb up in. You could build platforms with either shelves or boxes up to the top cage as if they were stairs. Boxes would provide hiding places for treats so he had to search for them.
