Question Moving my hamster back and forth?

I own a Russian Dwarf. I got him around 2 months ago. Now that the summer holiday is over I moved back into my dorm and took my hamster with me. I don't think he even realised he moved, he's been happy as always

During the weekends I plan on going home, and I would really like to be able to take Winston with me since I don't really feel comfortable leaving him, even if it's just for 1-2 nights. I already have a cage for him to live in when I'm at home so ideally I'd take him in a travel cage back and forth.

My main concern is whether that will stress him out. And what would be the worst: switching cages every week, or the travelling itself. I don't want to cause him any harm.

Unfortunately the cage I have at home isn't the same one as the one he's in now. Otherwise I could just decorate it the exact same way and he wouldn't even know the difference.. but his usual cage has bars while the other one is full glass. I think that might be the main problem because it would be a big difference from what he's used to?

I must say he isn't very prone to stress, nothing really seems to freak him out. So should I try it and see what happens, or is it a big no-no?
Maybe I should go out and buy the exact same cage for him to live in at home?

I really hope you guys can give me some advice! I know travelling isn't very recommended but do you think he'll do fine on his own for 2 days? I don't really like the idea of that either..

Thanks in advance!

I think the actual travelling part would depend to some extent on the length of time it takes, every weekend may be a bit much if it's a long journey but if you're ham doesn't stress easily & you can provide everything he needs for the trip I don't see that it would hurt to try.
I would try to make his cage as similar as possible in both places, if you could buy another cage that might help & take some of the substrate from the cage he's in with you each time so it smells familiar when he gets there.
One trip wouldn't hurt & then maybe you can better judge how he responds to the changes.

It's a 40 minute drive, so I guess that's not too bad. Sometimes I go by bus and it's 2,5 hours tho, do you think that would be a bit too long? If so, would it hurt to leave him alone for two days? (food & water provided of course)
I don't really want to leave him but I guess it's better than taking him on a 2,5 hour trip twice in 2 days in a tiny travelling cage..

The idea of 2.5 hours on a bus sounds not so good. Not only in a traveling case, but its a massive jumble of noises and smells and not much to do in the event he freaks out a bit.

I'd say a weekend is fine to leave him on his own, so long as you can have someone check daily that he is out and about, the water and food is full and he hasn't gotten stuck anywhere in the cage, or had an accident. So long as someone checks in on him, he'll be fine.

I agree the bus ride sounds way too stressful, leaving him would be a better option, as long as he has everything he needs he'll be fine for a couple of days. If you have someone who could check on him so much the better.
