Default Decisons Decisons

Sofia, my little invisible ham, is currently in a Ferplast Kios. It's a nice cage, decent size, fantastic quality and what have you.

But... The Barney is bigger, taller and only £40...

I keep looking at Mylo's Barney and wishing that Sofia had one. Because of the shelf that comes with it she'd have some cover (I'd put it low down) and I'd put in the one I'm making for her as well which would add even more cover. The base is also deeper and she loves to burrow. I could also put her toys on the shelves (some at least) so that she could burrow without things getting in her way and that. The access is also much better.

IF I can sell the Combi 1's and then afterwards sell the KIOS, the cost of the Barney would be more than covered.

What do you guys think?

I have two problems - getting her from the KIOS to the Barney and that my partner isn't convinced it's worth it. He says I can do what I like but I'd rather have him on board with it all as he loves the hammies and they live in our bedroom so he'll have to look at it every day too lol.

Help

I would go for it.

It doesn't sound like your partner is opposed to it - he's probably just thinking she has a perfectly good cage so what does she need another one for. I've often thought the very same thing when I've seen another cage I like better If you feel the Barney would be better for her, once it's all set up and she is settled in, then I am sure he will think it was worth it

This may seem strange coming from me but... I wouldn't do it to be honest. Sofia sounds so nervous that the extra space could make it all even worse, I'd want her relatively happy in the kios before offering her even more space to play in (the kios is 3200 square cm-ish, the barney 4000 square cm-ish so it is a big change really).

It might be that she's no worse in the barney but the kios is big enough for her to not urgently need more space, so bigger might just make her more unhappy. I'd want to get her a barney in your situation but given how scared Sofia seems I'm not so sure it'd be in her best interests. I know the barney shelf could help provide shelter, but you can always add a cheap shelf to the kios to get the same benefit of that bit without giving her even more space to hide from you in.

Neither option is wrong (unless Sofia hates the barney) but I'd definetly be wary of upgrading with a ham as nervous as Sofia is

Hmmm. Yeah, it could cause problems. She's not nervous in the cage as such but scared of people. She's happy enough running on her wheel, burrowing, searching for scattered food and that and must spend a lot of time above ground when we're sleeping.

Not sure now D:

Sorry... It just seemed worth mentioning. Lucky was the same - happy in the cage but petrified of us, in the end it took months before we could give him the same size as our other hams because in a bigger cage it'd have been too difficult to get him out when we need to. Now he's willing to walk into a jar for us and he's moved up to the cage that drove me nuts by being empty for months before he could move in, but moving him sooner would definetly not have been the best idea for Lucky (for my sanity yes, for Lucky's no and his comes first unfortunately for me lol)

Maybe see if you can sell the Combis first and then check the Barney price when they've sold? Then you can rule out the if about selling the combi cages and give Sofia more time to settle too

Haha don't be sorry, appreciate the opinions! I'm going to have to wait for the Combi's to sell anyway really so I'll look into it again once they are sold. Hopefully she'll be a little less nervous by then!

Makes sense, I hope the Barney price stays low and that Sofia gets more confident in the meantime

Hmmm tough one.

My Doris the chinese is not quite as nervous as sofia but never wants to come out, felt her ZZ1 Didn't offer her enough space so decided on the Barney. Best thing i ever did, although she still isn't much of a 'comer outter' ive been able to fit far more things for her to do in there, plus hammocks etc. So she feels like she's not exposed as such. I see her far more often now and although not quite brave enough to venture out regular she loves to poke her nose out under her shelf for treats.
