Smile Falco Small Pet Cage v's Ferplast Gabry 80

Very Good Evening to You All!

Can anyone tell me which they would purchase for a very special pair of baby Gerbils for my two DD's?

Falco Small Pet Cage 75x45x62 = £119

Or...

Ferplast Gabry 80 Gerbil Cage 79x30.5x51.4 = £95.50

I wish for them to have a long & healthy life so have been doing my research, however, your wealth of knowledge would be most appreciated.

If there is a better alternative, please feel free to advise.

Thank you in Advance!

GerbilWibblyWoo! Xxxx

So, I have ordered the Ferplast Gabry 80, reason behind my decision was the solid metal level 1 floor, the Falco's upper levels are soft wood & therefore would require replacing more often.

I have started shopping for extra deep shelves where they can rest, wasn't sure though, if terrarium rock bowl would make a good sand bath?

Didn't really want to put a huge cold metal chinchilla bowl in there, I'd like everything to look as natural as possible.

Also, does anyone use the terrarium sand mats as a base, then lots of chinchilla sand, I know it's their natural environment but most people I've seen use wood shavings, which I thought was bad for all rodents, I've seen some people use Megazorb but it looks quite unnatural to me...? Definitely don't want to use pete...

Evening All Xxxx

My gerbils found megazorb quite good for burrowing in but I found it was quite dusty and it made my allergy much worse. I stopped using woodshavings because they irritate Moonbeam's nose. I wouldn't use sand as the main substrate in their tank because it wouldn't hold up for making tunnels. Plus chinchilla sand in my experience is dusty and that can cause problems for gerbils and their owners. At the moment I'm using a mix of hay, shredded paper, Fitch recycled bedding, shredded cardboard bedding and aubiose. Gerbils really don't mind how natural the substrate is. They love burrowing and will burrow in anything. They like to collect up the hay and shredded paper, and they will chew on the aubiose and cardboard shreds too. I think they would find sand much less fun.

Excellent! Thanx Fluffydd - Hay, we have for our mini lop 'Bubble' anyway, aubiose & fitch all the way then, do you know if you can use aubiose for rabbits too...?

So many questions peeps, sorry!

If not tried aubiose with my rabbits. We use woodshavings, newspaper and hay. Aubiose doesn't seem as absorbent as woodshavings to me though.

You can use auboise and fitch for rabbits, that's fine Woodshavings produce phenols when peed on, so it is important if you use them to clean regularly and if possible, cover them with hay Also people have been told (by the makers) megazorb isn't suitable for small animals, I used to use it but it made me cough so much. Apparently because it is made for horse stables you don't get that problem outside but in a contained area it isn't the same.

I have my outdoor rabbits shed and hutch lino'd so in their litter trays I just line them with newspaper and fill with hay so no need for any substrate
Same with my indoor buns only they have rugs as they are free range and don't get on with laminate flooring

Thank You Leesha - it's hard to try & get hold of Aubiose here, live in Hertfordshire, so not as many animal lovers around I suspect...

I received the Ferplast Gabry 80 yesterday morning! It looks AMAZEBALLS!!! I ordered it @ 23:45 this Saturday 16th just gone & got it Monday 18th @ 10:30! And paid nothing for delivery, literally 1 day turnaround!

The cage is a Christmas present for my 2 DD's & I am trying to source a couple of Jirds now, I found some in a rescue centre, they're up to 3 months old, should I get them from a rescue???

There are honestly no breeders in my area!!! I really don't want to go to P@H! Does anyone know of anyone reputable local? Live in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire...

Xxxx
