Tubes
We have two hammies in the house. Syrian(Nibbles) and a DwarfThor). Two cages, 1 is a Ferplast Laura for the dwarf, (although I'm trying to get something bigger. I'm self employed at the moment so money is tight) and a Savic HH for the Syrian.
Do you think I could put a tube run through the HH so they can have each others company but not get to each other?
good idea?
Bad idea?

Re: Tubes
Not a good idea. It might make them feel they're being invaded by another hammy. Hammies don't need companions. We tend to think of our hammies in human terms and we would feel lonely all by ourselves. But they really prefer it that way...except if it's a ham of the opposite sex at the right time!

Re: Tubes
My Syrians are in cages right next to one another. Teddy in the middle. They are as close as they can be. Teddy has to go in his ball when I clean Rosie out. He gets stressed if he can see her. Have to have them both on there balls,on Rosie's clean out cos it makes teddy happy to be with her

Re: Tubes
long tubes that make a maze tunnel are good and hamster will enjoy then a lot just not going into another hamster territory.

Re: Tubes
First of all Savic Metro and Ferplast 6mm (FPI) tubes are interchangeable. I prefer the Savic Metro due to their design but they are hard to find and when we do find them they are expensive.
I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand hamsters are territorial and mark their territory with their scent glands so if you connect the two cages together one shouldn't go into the other's cage if they detect the other's scent. On the other hand if foraging in their own cages is not productive they might decide to cover a wider area and invade the other's territory and then one will try to kill the other.
Overall I would advise against it because hamsters don't need the company of other hamsters. But if you do try it I'd suggest scattering food in the cage instead of feeding from a pot. But you'll need to keep an eye on them during their waking hours which means staying up all night.

Re: Tubes
Connect tubes by all means, but NOT through another hamster`s cage! For the reasons already given. Larger cages can be attached to pods and smaller cages like the Ferplast Combi 1 or 2. These are too small as housing on their own, but make good little exploring areas.

Re: Tubes
I know that it is a nice idea, but frankly it is not a good idea. Syrian hamsters are solitary for a reason and I think that putting two hamsters really close together when they would never meet in the wild could cause a lot of stress. Hamster don't need company, and they really prefer not to have it. Hamster especially Syrian hamsters are very territory. I know that it is unlikely but there is also always the possibility of a accident, if one of the tubes came loose or something snapped (I know on my Hamster Heaven part of the yellow tube connecter on top of the cage has partly broken.) If one hamster came into contact with the other it could easy result in death.
