It's probably partly the change and new responsibilities and anxieties that come with renting your own place manifesting in the hamster escape worries. I let my hams free roam and none of them have ever chewed anything and one of them was a bar chewer in his old barred cage. Just keep a good check on the cage and the attachment to the bin and you should be fine.

I have the same clause re my hams. I wouldn't worry too much, just enjoy
