Question Changing Cages-Good or Bad?

I got tricked. I have a critter trail 2. I have a bin ready to become a bin cage but my Mom thinks that the change wont be good for them. If you didn't get a word I just said, basically is it okay to move a hamster from cage to cage or is it a no no? Thanks x1,000,000,000

It can be slightly stressful for them, but if your new cage is bigger & better for him then do it as it would be much better for him in the long run. When changing cage transfer his old bedding/substrate/shavings into the new cage or the majority of it that isn't wet etc so that it stills smells of him. Also of course his toys etc. I have changed my hammy's cages or extended them and they have all been fine, wondered round exploring their bigger space but all happy.

It can potentially be a little stressful, but it depends on your hamsters temperament. My little Todd has gone from box to bin, back into the box into a different bin, then back into another box and into a cage - and he is completely fine. Within minutes of being put in a new box, he's asleep. :L

Hamsters in general are very curious and love too explore, which is why they get so buzzed running around on the floor. As long as you put the substrate and bedding from his old cage into the new one so it smells familiar, he may well enjoy the change.

Your hammy will be fine, just as Scampi says. I've moved hammies lots of times to new, bigger homes. It's definitely better than a small home for your ham. He/she will be a little agitated, but only until she/he settles in. Good luck.

For hamster changing cages can be a bit stressful, but moving to a bigger cage is always better. In the long term moving them to a better cage though a little stressful at the time is a good idea as your hamster will more like live a longer and happier live. Critter trail cages are really to small for hamsters as you kinda need at least four so that they reach the required standard. It is great however that you have realised this and making a bin cage is a really good idea... as it will give your hamster more room. I personally would move you hamster but you know the situation better than I do. Good Luck
