Default Wood for toys etc

Is there any types of wood that shouldn't be used in a hamster cage?

You should't use any kind of coniferous wood as resin is toxic for hamsters. Even if you find a piece of coniferous wood that doesn't seem to resinate, there might be little depots of resin in it (I don't know what they are called in English, we call them "Harzgallen" in Germany) and if your hamster gnaws on the wood, he might open some of those depots.
It's better to use hardwood like from poplars (that's what I usually use), hazel, beech trees or birch trees.
