DIY IKEA Billy Extension Cage

I was planning on this DIY for March, but I'm slightly impatient when I get something in my head, so I created Smudge's IKEA Billy cage this weekend I still have a few things to add like handles on the lid, a hook clasp for the lid, and some iron edging for the front.

When I saw all the pieces, I thought, "What was I thinking...why didn't I wait until March?" But it went together pretty quickly...Thank you IKEA for making things easy!


I wedged the glass in, just to see what it looked like...someone seems to like the space!


I moved to the garage to use aquarium sealant to permanently fix the glass. Man is that stuff STINKY!!


While waiting for the sealant to dry, I quickly created the lid. Much easier mesh job than the bin cage


This morning I attached some hinges, covered the holes on the walls with contact paper to hide them, and it was move in day :

Beautiful cage! And Smudge definitely looks very happy in it.

BTW, does the silicone smell dissipate pretty fast for you? When I used it I had to wait 2-3 days before the stinky smell is gone.

The smell only lasted the night that I used it, by morning when I woke, it had dissipated. Maybe it depends on the brand.

The internal dimensions are 30"x 12.25". Certainly not a Detolf (I don't have e space for one of those) but larger than her previous bin.
