wooden hamster cages on zooplus
Are these new, never seen them before, I know I didn't when I was looking in January before we got Patrick. They look very nice, though I imagine you would have to treat the wood inside.

Re: wooden hamster cages on zooplus
Personally I think they should be ashamed of themselves. We're talking rodents here, little critters that chew wood for fun and teeth trimming. Also, any weeing would soak into the wood and start the wood rotting. I would never put my hammies in a wooden cage. Ask any self respecting mouse how he got into your home.

Would they even have to chew through? What's to keep a clever someone from pushing the "Removable, coated tray for easy cleaning" open and getting out that way?

I agree, a hammy would soon get out, in fact they'd make it a mission!

Re: wooden hamster cages on zooplus
I didn't realise this was a bad cage. I thought the size was okay and as I've seen rabbit hutch cages used for hams I thought wood was safe. It looks cute.

The germans use cages like that with no problems.

Re: wooden hamster cages on zooplus
And it's becoming more popular in the degu community - at least one forum is advocating the change from wire cages to wooden ones, and it seems to work well.

Re: wooden hamster cages on zooplus
This is what my hammy Patches does to wood. And my Hammy Coco actually chewed through a circular cap on a habitrail tube. How he got his teeth in the curve, I have no idea. So I'd guess that wood in nice straight pieces wouldn't be difficult at all.
