Default Poundstretcher and Argos cages

I have been meaning to post this for a while

yesterday I went into Poundstretcher I spotted the pet aisle checked out the hamster cages and found only one on sale it was 30cm wide by 30cm long by 15cm tall (I had a tape measure on me as I was going to measure some clothes rails as a favour to my dad) is it me or is this only fit for the bin ?

next I checked out Argos for the same reason and spouted the ludicrously small cages and Rotosatak (which should be made illegal to be used as a main cage for a hamster me thinks) in the catalogue which included limited poor advice on species i.e. all hamsters are solitary. And the cage and accessories were all designed for ‘kid appeal’ rather than the hamster in mind. The worst part of this was that they were branded with Bratz, Sponge Bob Square Pants, and Dora the Explorer brands for three year olds who could never care for a hamster. There was one unbranded cages and this was smaller than the rest . Me thinks this is disgraceful and is encourage ‘impulse buying’ of hamsters without any concern for the welfare of the hamster.

I hate those Argos cages, it actually makes my blood boil when I look at them in the catalogue. I keep meaning to contact them about it. I will get round to it!
Seriously though, if a lot of hamster people did that, perhaps it would work... rabbit people achieved the same with Tesco -

Earlier this year, supermarket giant, Tesco, withdrew their starter hutches from sale from all branches due to pressure from RWAF members. RWAF Veterinary Executive, Judith Brown said “We simply couldn’t believe how tiny these hutches were. They were totally unsuitable for rabbits. Rabbits need exercise and lots of it. If you think of how they live in the wild, you will understand that they need plenty of space in which to run around. It is unacceptable to house a rabbit in a tiny hutch. We were delighted that Tesco acknowledged our concerns”.

I agree we should petition Argos for their removal - what's so wrong with Argos selling good size cages i.e. Immacs Rody's Cambridges etc

Exactly.
Sadly I expect the plastic tat they stock sells better than proper hamster cages that are SHOCK actually suitable for an animal to live in.
People will buy a shiny plastic Bratz/Spongebob Squarepants prison for their little darling's new living, breathing furry toy. Until they get bored after two months
When I was about fourteen a friend of mine kept her hamster in this. No add-ons or anything. He was a big Syrian boy (a gorgeous sable LH if I remember correctly) and he lived about a year in just that. I was over her house once and ended up feeding and watering him myself because he had nothing. This girl and I later drifted apart but I heard from another friend who was still involved with her that the psycho brother later killed the hamster with an aerosol spray
The story is mostly OT (but one that still upsets me greatly ) but it shows that no one pays any attention to the 'starter kit' in the description, if you sell something like that alone people will use it as is for the life of the animal.

I hate the Bratz cages, we used to get families in the petshop buying a hamster after they had just been to Argos and bought one. Sometimes we refused to sell them anything, allthough they probably just went to another petshop.

We didn't make any money on the animals that we sold, we depended on the owners buying their cages from us!

I detest those little Argos cages.

Jessalina, Tesco's might have stopped selling their tiny rabbit cages but I saw their new hamster cage range a couple of weeks ago - absolutely tiny, rubbishy cages

Hi I have seen those aswell and have seen the Dora cage in the flesh well the plastic lol. It is so small and it would be so cruel to keep a hammy in a small cage like that.

I contacted argos about a bed and htey got back to me within 24 hours. You are right they shouldn't show 2 hammies together in the cages people will get the idea that they can be kept together.
