I've decided to try more colorful things in my girl's tank thanks to all the inspirations in this thread. Dita and Penne are major burrowing fiends, so they get 8"-10" of substrate to dig to their little hearts' content. The downside is, of course, I can't ever find them when I want to. We still need to go buy a stand for the tank, it's still just sitting on the floor for now.
