100cm mamble cage
I have just purchased the mamble 100cm cage for our Syrian hamsters. It's 100cm x 54x 64. It's very tall and I am concerned about the height when they start to climb in case they fall from the top. Does anyone else have this cage and can give me some advice. Tks.

Re: 100cm mamble cage
Hi there. i don't have this cage, but I have a similar one in length that is smaller in height but even I still get scared sometimes with the hamsters crazy antics lol. What I'd recommend you do is use hammocs that you can hang at different heights around the cage to help break falls rather than plummeting to the ground.
If you haven't got any hammocs, in the meantime you could use an old dish towel or cloth and hang that in the cage (or even sacrifice a couple for that purpose) and it'll save money too. There are some funny hammocs and hanging things out there so you may find a few you want too and you can hang them at different lengths.
The last thing I'd recomend would be more levels which you could attach around the cage to make less climbing room and add in more space for the hammy too. It's an amazing cage and when we got our current one for our Syrian it was a choice.of the Mamble or Alexander.
Hope that helps.

Re: 100cm mamble cage
I got some great hammocks at very reasonable prices off eBay, there are people who make them & will do the exact size you want if you email them.
It is a bit alarming when I see one of our hamsters dropping from th etop of the cage but they don't seem to notice much! Only our Syrians do it, our Chinese is far better at climbing & seems to have more sense

Re: 100cm mamble cage
Adding shelves (you can buy and paint wooden ones cheaply from B&Q) helps and filling in the gaps with hammocks like the others have said
Just checking - when you say 'Syrian hamsters' are they living apart? Sometimes people are unaware that they're solitary and can't live together.

Re: 100cm mamble cage
you can also make your own hammocks out of old tshirts, tea towls, shopped up old ripped jeans, just tie it through the bars, if they do chew it then its cheap to replace
I think erin loves dwarf hamsters has one of these, for prof.fatface, or phoenix, or the slightly smaller one which is also tall.
the £1 shop in summer sell a long roll of willow sticks (a bit like the bendy log bridges, but thinner, not as strong, they do make nice little levels/wooden hammocks

Re: 100cm mamble cage
A nice deep layer of substrate will help to cushion a fall too, I'd definitely go with the hammock too though

Re: 100cm mamble cage
Thank you all so much. The old jeans are a great idea. I have ordered a big hammock off eBay so that should help too. I have 2 Syrian hamsters and yes they are in two cages. So glad to find this forum.

Re: 100cm mamble cage
Hammocks and shelves are definetly the answer, we've got two tall rat cages in use and Muffin has full length shelves (B&Q) overlapping slightly so the fall can't be too much, and Dusty has loads of corner shelves and hammocks and other hanging rat stuff to block the fall.
Course Muffin is too smart to walk off the edge of a shelf, and Dusty only walks off in one spot - so I chucked a hammock there to shorten the fall even more and now she enjoys diving into the hammock and climbing out again lol. Still best to have stuff to break the falls though.

Re: 100cm mamble cage
I have it and it scares me too. Hammocks and shelves are the way to go and a lot of substrate to pillow a fall if it happens. I am about to get another Syrian after the holiday and will be putting them in the Mamble. My Syrian who was in it before had a fall but fortunately was alright. He isn't a climber and I think that shows he isn't really great with heights to begin with so now he's in another less high cage. This time around I will be using a LOT more hammocks!!!
