oh, Penny.. what a gal.. LOL.. fleece is very dangerous for hams.. I read on HC a member's ham, ate that stuff that looks like cotton balls pulled apart.. and his ham got very, very sick.. same with fleece, and materials that do not digest and break down, could be deadly for hams.. I think there's a section in Wiki, on the materials to not put in cages.. I may be wrong, my heads spinning, I read so much information, where I can get on hams.. LOL..

Re: ***Cages in the USA***
Starter ferret and chinchilla cages work wonderful for hamsters. I have Hamphrey, a Syrian in one. They aren't the cheapest option but it is worth it.
They're generally simple designs making them easy to clean as well.
One option: Kaytee Kaytee My First Home 3-Pack (Assorted Colors) Small Pet Cages

I don't have those ones, mine is like those but from a thrift shop of sorts.
I'm assuming the wires would be fine but it all depends on what cage, which is why it would be best to check and actual store if possible. Mine was fine, the bars were quite tightly spaced, almost more than some hamster cages!
I just thought that was a good example.

Re: ***Cages in the USA***
The wires a way too wide. As Esmy said it would need to be meshed or your hamster would get out.

Re: ***Cages in the USA***
Thought I'd share this cage I came across. Expensive but roomy and 1/2" bar spacing. My First Home Multi Level Home for Exotics - 30 in. x 18 in.
It can also be found on Amazon, but Amazon's dimensions are messed up as usual. The first link says the cage is 30.5"L x 18"W x 30" high. That's 549 sq. in. floor space. Not sure how durable the plastic is though, but thought I'd share.

Re: ***Cages in the USA***
We tried the Marchioro Kevin 82. The bars were too far apart and our hammy escaped out of it 4 times. We then decided to go with a glass tank (aquarium). It wasn't the time of year for the sale at Petco so we found a great bargain on Craigslist for a 75 gallon tank. They have TONS of used glass aquariums there.

Re: ***Cages in the USA***
Really mickapoo? That surprises me, I have the Kevin & can't even get the tip of my little finger through the bars! I've had 3 different Russians in there with no trouble at all, I wonder if you had a broken bar or something else that wasn't obvious to see.
