Lightbulb Handmade with love...for Daisy

This has been in planning for a while now. Finally we were ready to start. I picked up the supplies yesterday from Bauhaus in town.

6mm wood, 5mm plastic, wooden angled moulding, and metal edging.

This desert cork is for the floor, I ordered it a little while ago.

The cork is 60cmx90cm.....so that meant the floor needed to be a touch bigger than that.

For the walls I got:

2x 91.5cmx50cm (1x6mm-wood and 1x5mm-plastic)
2x 61.5cmx50cm (1x6mm-wood and 1x5mm-plastic)

For the base (to put the cork on) I got:
91.5cmx61.5cmx0.6cm wood.

For the metal edging I got 4x4.5cmx2.5cm
the wooden edging is 15mmx35mm. Again I got 4.

16mm screws...they did pop up through the wood but that's fine, it helps keep the cork in place and the wooden edging is over the top of where the screws come up through the wood.

No glue or silicon used at all.

I'm going to add lots of pics so if anyone wants to look at them and make their own playpen/cage/habitat they can see exactly how we made ours.

Note: The cork is just for fun. Daisy has a huge digging pit and I wanted to give her a different floor experience in her playpen. When she's older and moves into the playpen permanently I'll add substrate to it, Nice and deep for her. You can make it exactly like this without the cork floor and it will be just as good. It was just silliness from me that made it with a cork floor

Now it's not totally finished, I need to finish the top with nice edging/moulding and then it'll be perfect. But I needed to see how big it was going to be before I could do that. More shopping this week

We clamped the metal down really well so we could cut the corners. Making sure that You cut both edges. So the angle is through the entire bit.

Very slowly saw the pieces. Only cut one edge....on two pieces. Then lay it on the floor piece of wood to check the length and mark where you need to cut the other end of the metal.

File off the sharp edges...making sure you dont scratch the top surface of the metal.

Same again for the third piece and the fourth.

This what they should look like. Longest side up, shorter side flat.

Measure and mark where you're going to put your screws. Equally on all the pieces.

Not too close to the inside corner.

Drill the hole on the central line. Drill out the hole carefully on the outside with a larger drill bit so you can sink the screws.

Screw down the pieces. First only three sides.

My son is helping to hold the floor so hubby can file it to fit.

Check the wood and plastic fit properly by putting them in place and then trying the last piece of metal. You may find you need to sand the wood to get the fit right. It is a case of millimetre work here. You cant possibly cut it exactly. A good file and you'll be able to get it to fit perfectly.

Just like that.

Use tape to hold the corners if you dont have enough hands.

Ok, nearly done. Just the inside edging to do.

We didn't glue it down because the mitred corners hold the wood in it's place well enough without it.

Short side up, longer side flat this time.

Cut the pieces the same as before. Cut two edges, check and mark the other end and then cut. You may need to file to get the perfect fit. It's all fun

And it's finished (minus the top edging...I need to buy that still)

I had an extra piece of plastic which happened to fit in there perfectly.

I still have to take off the protective plastic. Opps, sorry.

Oh and I nearly forgot to say. The best thing about not gluing anything is it's flat-pack-able. You can take it anywhere easily.

No, it's 50cm straight up. I dont think there's any need for a lid.

Daisy isn't that coordinated. She'd never manage it.

Yes...to the tower cage that we built for her from a Leon and a Leon-wannabe.
