why do ferplast supply fluffy bedding with there cages
i just bought a duna for my new addition tomorrow and discovered that it has supplied with it fluffy bedding
is it me or is this highly irresponsible for a major cage maker to supply a dangerous bedding with its products
I am writing a letter of complaint as I am furious that they would do such a thing some new owner would probably use it being unaware of the dangers of its use

All of the cage suppliers seem to supply stuff for the cage, be it the inappropriate bedding, food dishes that are impractical, wheels that you too small and impractical etc - all you really need is the cage. I'm sure most owners would want to accessorise and furnish the little one's home themselves and make the decision appropriate to the cage user. I had a scarey collection of useless items, that I have finally got rid off - but seriously what clutter. It is such a shame that they do this as your right, new owners would not have a clue.
I don't know if writing would do any good but it may well be worth a try .

I don't mean to sound harsh, but before you send the letter or Email, please check your spelling and grammar, they won't take it seriously if it looks like it's been written by a kid.

Although the Ferplast bedding is 'fluffy' Matty, it is I believe not dangerous in the way that some 'cotton wool' type bedding is. It is digestible so it shouldn't block the intestines if swallowed, and it is not 'stranded' so it wont wrap round necks, legs etc.
Having said that I am not a fan of it tbh - plain kitchen or loo roll works best for me, but I know that Ferplast hold themselves up as very responsible in matters such as these.
Most people say that fluffy bedding is bad because it is so hard to distinguish between the good and bad kinds - i,e the cotton wool type bedding could be natural and digestible or it could be a man made fibre that causes the problems mentioned! Once you get either type out of the packaging it is almost impossible to tell the difference.

Just to add I was looking after a hamster when the owner went on holiday, they had the Ferplast Rainbow and used the bedding supplied. The poor hamster poo was threaded together with the bedding and came out like sausages . She was also using the supplied wheel e.t.c I tried to tell her it was too small and the bedding was dangerous but she didn't listen. Consequently, the hamster died after 4 months Poor hammy...

I am afraid that in my opinion NONE of the fluffy bedding is safe. Even if it is described as natural and digestible that does not prevent it from becoming tangled around tiny toes and feet.It can tie very tightly around a limb, cut off circulation and lead to loss of limb and blood poisoning. It is manufactured in pretty colours which must be full of dye and appeals to kids especially. Granted it is soft and to a human appears comfy but if you have ever observed hammies carefully chewing their kitchen roll/tissue and moulding it in to nice nests I think you would agree this is a much more natural behavior than the fluffy stuff which they have to push through. I have heard of many hamsters whose whole gut has been pulled out with feces and caused death. Also pups have been strangled and lost limbs. In any shape or form this bedding is not safe.
Matty - why not get yourself a Google toolbar with the spellchecker on it. Just click on the ABC tick and it advises on spelling and grammar. Many of our users have dyslexia and other problems and have found this facility very helpful. Please do not be offended as we want you to get the best out of your posts (and your A levels). I myself always run my posts through this to check them

Souffle that makes scarey reading  . I took advise from the forum when I started to be owned by hamsters again and although I did have the fluffy bedding at the time i threw it all out and now only use toilet roll. Its more fun to watch them tear up toilet roll!
I didn't know about the spell checker thing - I shall have to have a look at that as I know that sometimes I type and go if you know what I mean
