What kind/size of cage was he in before Alison? Maybe it's too much space for him if he's been kept in smaller and filling with more toys etc would help.
My Rudi is a Syrian boy and he's exactly the same in his Rody Rabbit - sleeps all day, comes alive about 11pm even when I get him up sooner. I believe Syrians are also fond of climbing and I know Rudi was always on the bars in his old cage so maybe get him something that's not too high to climb on. And he makes a heck of a racket at his water bottle, but only drinking no chewing. They seem very similar though so I don't think you should be overly worried

Thanks, he seemed more settled last night - wheels still loud but less chewing of bottle and he seemed happy on his wheel.
I'll ask what he was in at the foster place I know it was a lot smaller than a ZZ1. When I got him he went in a smaller cage whilst I meshed the Zz. He was so not impressed with that but did swing about on the bars.
I'll stick with the Zz for now with lots of toys like tubes in.
Will measure up see what else I could look at cage wise if needed.
Also want to move him off the floor so he's up on a cupboard.

I'd seriously love to offer his brother, who's the only one of the brothers left in rescue, a home but will need to see how things go space and cage wise as want to make sure Wilfred is all settled and happy first.

If he's not a huge Syrian, and settles peacefully in the ZZ1 then he is fine in there, my George was in one for a while and perfectly happy as he'd been in a tiny cage before. I was lucky enough to have the space and the finances to upgrade him to a ZZ2 where he was equally happy.

I'm a real believer in finding the right cage for the individual hamster, not going on a one size/type fits all theory. At the moment I have robos in a mini duna, ZZ1's and a ZZ2, all nice and settled in what suits them

Thanks, it is a case of seeing how he settles in.
I went for the ZZ1 as I had a spare one in the garage and meshed it, when I first got him he had to go in a mini duna whilst I meshed the ZZ1 - way too small for him. He does seem a bit more settled in but I might see how he gets on with a water bowl as thet bottle is driving me scatty keepig me awake! If that does not work I can easily move him to the lounge next door overnight if I need a good nights sleep.
I could buy a new cage like a ZZ2/Heaven/Cambridge financially but it's the space side I struggle with.
I must read the Imac fantasy review as I could build upwards with that.

My Chinese hammy is in a mini duna and seems to love that.

Years ago I kept my hamsters in a plastic tank with a rotastack unit above.

So many cage options out there!

The other option for water is one of these:

ZooMed Repti-Rock Reservoir Reptile Terrarium Water: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

I used one for Magic until I needed more space in his ZZ2 to accommodate both a saucer and a Trixie wheel.

Unlike most bowls it is hard to knock over because the reservoir makes it quite heavy, although he did manage to chuck quite a lot of Megazorb in it on several occasions.

It is quite big. Someone on Hamster Hideout has a fabulous one made for hermit crabs but I think she's in Singapore or somewhere and I've scoured the internet for one with no luck.

I kept a syrian in a zz and moved him to a imac fantasy with 2 extensions and he loved that

I agree with Pompompoms completely, its mostly just finding what suits your ham.
Our russian hybrids are on their third cage (and its not the biggest they've had), our robo Skip is on his fourth, and Whizz has tried three alone (she now has company so it gets complicated lol). Our syrian also had to have two cage expansions before she was fully happy (she'd kill us if we took her rotastak off her, but was still a pest about helping us make her happy lol). She's got a third now but thats just an unused big cage getting some use really (she's happy with it but was fine without too).

I do hope Wilfred settles down soon, good luck!
