They need to hear normal everyday noise matty so they dont grow up skittish. We keep ours in a spare bedroom with normal light etc. We don't act very differently when the pups are there. Its just a case of not touching or poking around the nest but we get them used to all sorts of noise, like hoovering, TV, music etc as soon as they are out so that when they go to their new homes they are used to it and nice and tame and confident for the new owners.

I would second what souffle said Matty. My recent litter were born in the small bedroom where all the other hamsters are kept. The bedroom is used quite a lot because it doubles up as the computer room and someone is often in here. I just kept the cage on the bottom shelf and avoided disturbing the nest. My babies are quiet and tame and nothing bothers them, including dogs barking, tv etc. Another baby the same age I bought in, has taken me a month to get what I call tame. He has been so jumpy and nervous I can only think he wasn't accustomed to a noisy family like us.
Good luck with your plans, you seem to be giving everything a lot of thought.

Hi Matty,
yes, Souffle and Basia have said what I was trying to get at. Normal levels of noise and light are fine, and as they grow they need to get used to living in a home environment.

Keeping it really quiet can be useful for the first week or so, mainly so as not to disturb Mum and to stress her in any way as she gets used to having her new babies.

I know keeping them in a bedroom for the first week helped our Princess who now has 13 fat pups running around and has moved back into our fairly noisy hamster/living room! (and as for noise, they now can make more than my two teenage daughters do ) well- maybe not, but they spend a lot of time talking to each other and telling each other off - plus telling Mum "I'm hungry"
