It would be an escape risk to leave the lid open. Your hamster could knock things over or pile substrate/bedding etc in one area and then be able to climb out.

The hardest part of making a bin cage for Ivy was cutting the window on the top. My husband helped me and ended up using his drill bit as a saw (awkward, loud, and it took awhile). We then filed off the sharp edges and added the mesh. We will definately be buying some sort of rotary tool attachment if we make another cage.
That being said, I love the bin cage. I can add enough bedding for Ivy to tunnel, the mess stays contained, and the bin is really secure. Ivy is a happy hamster!

Hamster balls are not good for them at all, they can be stressful & dangerous & really don't benefit in any way.
If you don't have room for a playpen try to section of a small area or use a large box, plastic storage bin or cardboard box with a wheel & toys for out of cage time.
