open nest or not?
All of my hammies have slept in one of the savic igloos, Pickles igloo was getting mucky and grubby so I got him a new yellow shiny one.. Thing is he will not sleep in it whatsoever..I used part new bedding and part old smelly bedding.. I don't know whether to just remove it and see about open nesting or not.
An open nest may make him susceptible to drafts and noise though..and I don't even know how to get him to open nest.. Ive emptied his igloo and left a pile of bedding in the corner.. see what he decides later I guess..
At the moment he has crammed himself in his raisin tub, tried to get a clear piccie but was at an awkward angle.

Re: open nest or not?
Hamsters are crazy little creatures,If I was you I would give him back his dirty igloo, maby give it a good scrub first just to clean the surface dirt off but leave the smell. They get very attached to things and often have break downs when we try do something good for them.My Peanut always used to sleep in a wooden house I had for her then one day just decided to pile all her shavings in one corner and make that her new bed. It's there home they decide the way they want it and some times it's jut not quite the way we wanted it.If you decide to keep the new igloo give your hammy some time he will find a use for it eventually.

Re: open nest or not?
I'm sorry I just had to laugh at his silliness. I'm sure he'll decide it's not worth it and go to the new igloo.
Perhaps it's partly because he's hot? Hows the weather been?

Re: open nest or not?
It's def warmer here than normal, Peanut still sleeps in his igloo and he has a furrier coat. I guess Pickle just needs a cooler area to sleep.. I've put his smelly ol igloo back in with some bedding inside and next to it.. He has too many choices now if you ask me ..
BTW sorry for the man bits in the piccie..

Re: open nest or not?
lol at the sleeping position! Guy hams always seem to sleep with their 'bits' in the air!
I always give my hammies an open nest and a house/box to sleep in so they can choose where to sleep.

Re: open nest or not?
HAHA! Pickle! Those raisin tubs are tiny too! He looks cosy though.
Sen outgrew her igloo, so naturally made an open nest herself. And so I've just kept up with that. She moved her current nest under the shelf in her ZZ, and the other day scooped all the substrate up from the rest of the cage and put it in that corner, so she could burrow into it. I decided to leave it - she's obviously happy that way. There's a wee gap at the side of the shelf, and she filled that with substrate - apart from a wee hole so she can get easy access to her water bowl on the shelf, without climbing up the shelf.

Re: open nest or not?
I prefer open nests as then they can have all the space they like, also if you have an igloo its more mess to clean out

Re: open nest or not?
Another fan of open nests here, especially at this time of year, but my three are all in tank-style cages so I don't have to worry about draughts.
If he's got plenty of bedding and options, I'd leave him to it; I'm sure he'll pick his favourite and build a nest to snuggle in before long.

Re: open nest or not?
They are contrary creatures aren't they! Popcorn has always had an open nest, but this week has decided to start sleeping in his igloo (previously a food/chewtoy storage area) - he has packed in the bedding and megazorb like it's a sandcastle, I honestly dont know how he fits inside! I may have to remove it if the weather gets hot again?? I always liked the open nest idea; now he has a big gap under his shelf, which I'm not sure how to fill

Re: open nest or not?
I'd leave him in an open nest now Its summer and it can get very humid and sweaty in plastic little igloo/houses so its more hygienic and healthy to have an open nest, and plus as its been said they can have as much room as they like to stretch out
In winter i usually get a larger plastic tub to giveMilo, so it doesn't get sweaty but its still keeping him a bit warmer, and because hes on the floor he gets more of a draft.
