Default okay this may sound a bit silly but..

i got a imac fantasy with extension and im unsure if i should just put wood-shavings on the first floor on on the other 2 floors.

for now i have put a thick layer of shavings on the bottom level and on the other 2 i have a thin layer of shavings.

what is your opinion?
should i just put it on the first floor or all 3 floors?

thanks x

Is there a lip on the two upper floors? So that if your ham was to shuffle about and push the substrate would it stay in, or fall out?

I'd probably either have it how you've got it or not have any on the upper floors.

there is a little lip on the middle floor but my hamster would still be able to push the shavings out of the cage still.
on the top floor there is a built in bed so there is no bars on the top floor its surrounded with plastic

What about a little modification? You could use a long strip of cardboard on the extension level, place it on the inside behind the bars, to give it a larger lip. (I hope that makes sense.) It'd be completely gnawable, though if you've got a real chewer they may destroy it as soon as they find it. But if it worked, it'd allow you to use a thicker layer of substrate on each level.
