I would think 12mm mesh (rather than bars; two directions) would be okay for an adult Syrian? Maybe it's just because Pudding's a chubster though.

Re: best-bargainshop (eBay) Wooden Cages?
Yeah, maybe I'll do that But they do specifically say no shipment to the U.S. Also though, I'm sure the shipping itself would cost a fortune for such a heavy item.
Really, what we need is more cages actually sold in the U.S. My boyfriend had a theory yesterday that in the U.S. dogs and cats are more popular as there are more people living in suburban areas with sizable back yards, and Europe is smaller and small animals are popular (resulting in more cage demand and variety).

Oh definitely, the shipping cost would be astronomical; but who knows, it might still be worth it.
Agreed though, the dearth of good cages in the US is really sad. There's definitely a niche in the market if you're any good with woodworking and you wanted to start a business.

I remember my wee sister was watching Disney Channel and it was that Us Show Suite Life on Deck !
They were keeping a rat and the cage was no bigger than 30 cm !

I can never tell with the scale of photos, but you're probably right. It would be more sensible if it opened outwards, from the front, with a little guard to stop the bedding coming out.
Darn it.

Looks like you can just fill them to whatever height you want if you only use the top door to access the cage.
