Bedding?
Hi.
New boy Bailey is all set up in his cage, the only thing i am wanting to check on is the bedding.
At the moment he has that 'wool' stuff and has made himself a cosy little nest.
I remember i used to used that bedding for my ham when i was a kid too.
Even though it says it is safe for hamsters on the packet i just wanted a concensus really as i know some put it in their pouches.
Is it safe or should i change him to the shredded paper stuff?
Many thanks
Sally and Bailey xx

Re: Bedding?
Definitely remove the fluffy bedding right away if it is that.
It can kill a hamster if they eat it and it causes a bowel blockage or it can also tangle round toes and limbs cutting off the blood supply.
The shredded tissue is best or you can use ripped up plain white loo roll
Welcome to the forum.

Re: Bedding?
Hello and welcome!
What you have described sounds like fluffy bedding. As Souffle mentioned, it's very dangerous so I would remove it. You can use shredded loo roll instead (unscented).

Re: Bedding?
just to repeat what souffle and snickers said, fluffy bedding is very dangerous and you should remove it asap, you can replace it with either shredded plain paper or loo roll

Re: Bedding?
Yeah they market it as 'natural' and 'safe' - but there has been so many horror stories its best to avoid it. How the manufactures get away with labeling it as such is beyond me! Just ripped up cheap loo roll or the shredded jay cloth or shredded paper bedding is fine

Re: Bedding?
Thanks for the advice Peeps
I have taken it straight out and replaced with torn up toilet roll for now until i can get out tomorrow and get some safe stuff - would hate anything to happen to the little fella.

Re: Bedding?
As everyone else has said, please avoid fluffy bedding. I have made the same mistake before and my hamster got his foot tangled in it, luckily he was ok but it could of been alot worse! For now you can use plain unscented loo roll or kitchen paper

Re: Bedding?
Glad to hear you have taken it out. Im sure that Bailey is snuggled up in the shredded loo roll and has made a lovely new nest.

Mine are perfectly happy with loo roll full time, I have a bag of the safe bedding from p@h but it doesn't make a very good nest at all, it's lots of really small squares. It also is very messy so I wouldn't worry about getting different stuff too much.
Although as hope recommended the J-cloth stuff is also good and nest-able, just didn't want you rushing off to get safe bedding when Bailey is probably happy with the toilet roll
