Needing a new cage!
Hey there,
One of my Russian dwarfs, Louis (he lives alone as he was dumped at a p@h stores when he got mites, but thats another story) has developed a large tumour. The cage he is in at the moment, is 2 connected habitrail OvOs with 2 additional connected chambers, so it's a nice size for him alone. However, due to the tumour and the inevitable fact that he will eventually become weaker, i want to get a new spacious cage that doesn't have any tube connected compartments. We want to make his life as comfortable as possible so space is important as he has loads of chew toys and a soft bed thing as well as is house and other shiz!
I also want to think into the future, as much as it hurts me thinking about this, but when Louis eventually passes on, i would like to house a small colony of dwarfs!
So can anyone recommend any cages that will be able to keep Louis comfortable as well as be able to house 2-4 dwarfs?
Cheers,
Anthony

Re: Needing a new cage!
Thanks for your reply! I was thinking of making a bin cage for him a while back. The only reason I didn't is because I managed to get some cheap OvO cage accessories cheaply on eBay which extended his cage space a fair bit! I feel so awful for the little guy. He's never been fully healthy because of the imbeciles he was living with before they dumped him at P@H because he became ill. He was suffering with mites for 4 months before I came and took him home. He was itching and thus got loads of infections and his scent gland was oozing puss - of course, P@H didn't think of taking himt o the vets or anything -_-.
I just wanna give the lil' man the best few days/weeks of his life! Thankfully, he's doing VERY good at the moment, which means he may live for even a few months yet I'm gonna make sure he has the best few months of his life!
By any chance could you recommend a nice (pref silent as he lives in my room, haha!) wheel for him? and do you know the dimensions that the bin needs to be to fit everything in (height wise). I have a few 'bins' but not sure if they are big enough height wise.
Thanks again

Re: Needing a new cage!
A silent spinner is always good, he'll need a 6.5", they're really nice and very easy to push for the hamster
for more than one dwarf I'd recommend a zoozone 1 or two, but this might be too big for a sick dwarf..as they don't always like large spaces..
The advice for 2 dwarves sharing is mixed, because it has to be big enough for both of them, but sometimes larger territory can lead to them becoming territorial.
And the chances are that you'll have to seperate them, so will need a spare cage in case.
I'd look for a duna mini or rydon mill house second hand for him to have for now, I have single dwarves in these cages, and you can often find them pick up only on ebay for not too much.
I'd then buy a cage when you get your colony, which is suitable for them

Re: Needing a new cage!
as others have said him being ill may not be suitable for a larger cage as you would need for more than one dwarf...?
maybe something like a rody now he's ill? not TOO small but all on one level?
sorry to hear he is ill btw

I'd say a Mini Duna, you can remove the level if you wish and it is suitable for a pair of dwarves too.

Re: Needing a new cage!
I'd say go for a zoozone 1! As it is alot of space but isn't huge if you put a lot of hidey holes etc in.. and then you can also put a colony in there afterwards?

Re: Needing a new cage!
Or if you wanted a slightly bigger cage with one level I'd say a Duna Multy as it doesn't need meshing whereas the Zoozone does.

Re: Needing a new cage!
I would suggest a duna multy or a zoozone 1 also. They are not huge, and would be fine for your little chap too, when he gets less active you could just move essentials like food and water closer to his nest. The cage is also suitable for a pair, or a syrian, so would be multi purpose in the future if you wish!
The duna multy is about £50 and the bar spacing is narrow enough for dwarfs. The zoozone 1 is about £35 but the bar spacing is very wide so will need to be meshed even for a syrian.
