I assume the glass would be the most expensive bit D:
Out of curiosity where'd you get your glass from?
I was considering getting a zz2 for one of my hamsters..but would need a shelving unit to put it on anyway..so you know..this really isn't *that* much more work
(I'm practising how I'm going to ask my dad to make it for me ;p )

Baisicly yes.
And i havent got my glass yet, not sure where to get it

Re: Homemade Cage Plans
I googled it and found some places which sold glass cut to your exact measurements..but they all quote on a job to job basis =/
I found this price break down on a how to build a vivarium site
Quote:
Well there you have it. I hope this has given you some idea on how to go about building your own. Here’s a break-down of the cost. By using hardboard for back and white wood it would have saved about £12
Furniture board - £14
Plywood - £6.50
Runners - £5.50
Sealant - £5.00
Screws (2 packs) - £2.50
Glass (with smoothed edges and corners rounded) plus 2 finger plates - £10.50
|
but I can't help but think that glass quote painfully optimistic =/ I'll tell you if I get anywhere with it!>.<

Re: Homemade Cage Plans
The problem is that most people who market themselves as 'glass merchants' do like..windows etc, and less custom glass.
My dad is thinking of getting me perspex *if* I do this..(we're trying to decide on a wood..thinking skatelite) because he can get that easily, and has the tools to easily cut it >.<

Re: Homemade Cage Plans
My dad will build one..it's just whether the material we're going to use is hammy safe..
>.<
Wofunny, how is stellas cage? is the perspex casing scratched etc?
I really don't want that to happen if I choose perspex >.<
Just got paid too ..although owe my parents about £150..but still have £200ish left.. :3
Lucky you to find the custom glass cutter, have you got a quote?
Every site I found for an actual custom glass cutter would only quote on individual jobs, and since it's still mostly theoretical at this point, I don't have the exact dimensions.
I really hope I get one made too..the bottom half wouldn't be used unless Pillow permanently moves in with me (he lives with my boyfriend, but is at mine over the holidays.) and most likely wouldn't actually be used until next September. But building the cage would be a great way to condense all my hammy stuff, as I can put sesames future duna mini as well as alfies future multy on top ^.^
You doing any of the little jobs on your own this week wofunny? or waiting for the weekend?
I keep planning the cage *blushes* think sandy would LOVE it

Stella's cage is still un-broken, although where i had to screw on the perspex sheet there is a bit of very small cracks/scratches. I had to pick it up yesterday and i was very surprised at how light it was!
I havent asked for a quote yet, still need to phone my dad to check the thickness of the glass Ect.
I havent done any little things yet, but i am going to attempt to make some interior things tomorrow as i cant go to school because i have a virus
Gonna try make a small background, a wooden board with stones stuck to it.
