Default Do not buy the trixi hammock or the climbing frame!

as you all know the other week i bought milly a new hammock and climbing frame and i showed you pictures well.... i because i have been away from my house for a few days, milly have chewed through the hamster hammock to the otherside and even ripped the wood out of the floor in the hammock, as well as the climbing frame there is a rope on there with shredded bits hanging off.... so last night i picked up milly for the first time in 2 days, and she was quiet, thin and i felt something cold and wet on my hand.

IT WAS ONLY HER BACK FOOT! it was three times the size of her other feet, purple with bits of pus and blood seeping from her skin and not moving it at all, i was in such a shock i almost cried and when i looked there was cotton wrapped around her foot so bad that it went through her skin and it got effected. i s*** myself so bad and because it was 12:20 in the morning i couldnt phone no one, and it took me 3 and a half hours to try and get the cotton off from around her foot, i tried giving her treats, and everything, she wouldnt stop moving

so what i did, considering cotten losesns when you wet it, i put milly in the sink with some cold water, although she couldnt feel it on her foot because the cotton cut off her circulation so it was most probably numb, i put her in cold water, and she seemed ok and she didnt squrm

after she came out i put her on my bed and she started to clean herself so i managed to get a croshoing hook and managed to get at her foot by pulling a bit of the cotton that was around her foot and managed to get the hook between the cotton and her skin and pull it off her and i managed to get it off thank god i was 4cm long!!!

so i instantly got rid of the things i bought her, cleaned her cage from top to bottom give her a new bed and everything. and about an hour after i took off the cotton the colour came back in her toes but it was still really swollen and she is started to scream now, at least every 20 minutes or so, and she cant walk on her foot at all now and she is kinda walking on 3 legs, and it looks a funny shape and i think she have broken it.

its still the same today but her skin have all dried up and still really swollen and she cant walk on it what so ever i have tried all day to phone the vets and its engaged 24/7 i even went to a private vets to ask for advice because it would have cost me £25 pound just to have a look, never mind paying for antibiotics and when i told her about the foot, she said possible to either amputated or put down :'( and it would cost me over £300 and i havent got that money, s im going to get up really early tomorrow and use all my talkime to try and get through the PDSA again and if they cant get me an appointment then im going to just turn up with milly and my cat and demand to be seen to even if i have to sit there outside all day > .

but if they do have to put milly to sleep i would rather her just go in her sleep tonight than be suffering until i get an appointment, i know its a hard thing to say but id rather her go than a vet to kill her off, thats one thing i cant cope with let alone even think about. just now i bathed her foot again tonight and made sure she was comfatable and stuff but she is just in agony all the time i was up til 5 this morning with milly, plus i got a really bad chest infection atm.

i hve noticed the skin around her leg and top of her hip is a blackish colour, as if it is badly brused and shes not eating either and her foot is still seeping a bit and looks pussy.

its not fair i feel so sorry for her, i should have looked at her before i was away for 2 days i feel so ashamed that poxy hammock or climbing frame, im going to the petshop where i had it and demand to have them recalled and to have them taken off the shelf because it is so dangerous to hamsters and small pets. have any of you had this problem.

its not fair poor milly and poxy vet, poxy toys.

i dont know what to just make sure she is comfatable :'(

ill post in a pic of her foot so u all can see what its like, it is gory it does look alot better no than it did last night just her foot looks burned

She needs a vet as soon as possible, can you take her to the vet and ask to be seen as an emergency if you can't get through on the phone? If not ask the private vet is they can give you some metacam or something (an animal painkiller). It sounds like it will need to be amputated to be honest. Also you need to clean any wounds especially if they are looking a bit yukky, wipe them gently with weak saltwater.

im so so soryr to hear of her mis fortune, i hope you can get her seen too.

I must say,if it is the toy i think, i have 2 of these and have never had any problems with it. some hams just chew more etc so when i introduce a new toy i watch how they behave with it for a few days, so i dont think the toy should be entirely condemmed- is it this one you mean?

Hammock & Playbridge Gerbil or Hamster Cage Pet Toy: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors

keep us posted, good luyck x

I am so sorry couchy. I would say that the circulation has been cut off to the foot and it is now dead. Gangerene has set in and if the infection gets into her bone it will be very hard to shift. Couchy the foot needs amputation back to healthy live tissue and stiched over. She will not be feeling well as the toxins from the infection invade her body.
Can you explain this to the PDSA and say it is an emergency as she will be in distress.
I am thinking of you but I would not let her go on like this to pass at home because she will suffer as the gangerene progresses up her leg. The vet will advice if she can be saved or if she needs to be given rest.
Our vet only charges £9 for a small animal consultation and an op would be about £35. Can you ask around?
Thinking of you and Millie xx

Oh my god I am so sorry about this This is a total example that the plain cardboard toys and a simple wheel are the best toys for a hamster. Its horrible how they can injure themselves so easily. I already heard about legs being injured like this from being stuck in the cage etc. Im so sorry good luck, i hope you find a vet ASAP. Stay strong.
