I think that you can get clear bins that you would be able to see easily through, have a search on the net as I'm not sure what stores you have out there.

Somthing like this would be good: IKEA | Boxes & baskets | Secondary storage boxes | SAMLA | Box

or a really useful box (not sure if you have these in the us??) Go Shopping - Really Useful Boxes - 84 litre Really Useful Box

and as you can see from the pictures you can see quite easily through the plastic.

Smokeys bin is the Ikea one, you can see through it well... not as good as glass but still very well!

The mesh I have used is from a DIY/garden shop. I think it was for making bird coops/rabbit runs, but I'm sure that any plain metal (ie not coated with plasticy stuff) mesh would be fine. They also did some for putting round plants to protect them from being eaten. I used mesh with 0.5mm holes as I keep dwarves. I have put it on the inside of the roof bars and attached it with sandwich bag ties (I'd run out of cable ties!). For my bin cages I've used wire, and have seen others attach mesh to bin cages using bolts.
