Default Bradford Champs (National) 18th January 2020

Here are some pics from the Bradford Champs show. We had a great day and enjoyed the show very much. We only took Rosetta. She didn't place but she did very well and was high up the table. Overall Best in show was a Tristar Honey Syrian and Best Dwarf was a Black eyed white Chinese.

They all look lovely to me because i don't know the criteria they have to meet to come out tops.

Are hamsters judged by their appearance or temperament or rarity? I'm just curious and have always meant to ask.
Are hamsters ok with shows or do they mind sitting in small enclosures during the daytime?

I've only ever have been to one show and most of the hamsters were either asleep or just sitting there quietly. None were biting the bars or trying to get out which really surprised me.

Some had amazing fur and colouring i had never seen before.

I'd love to go to a hamster show.

I think each one of our hamsters is a winner in their owner's eyes.

Those little ones in the photos are all gorgeous and probably have amazing little characters too.

Beautiful winning hammies as ever. Tristar’s BIS has such a stunning face.

Ria, Souffle can tell you more and properly as she is a judge as well as a breeder. As I understand it, type and temperament dominate the judging. At the few shows I have been to, all the hamsters seem perfectly content in their show pens as they are used to it. Spend most of the time asleep! The classes are divided by male and female and then coat/colour type and the best of each colour or coat are judged against each other (like dog shows) until best male/female Syrian are the last left for BestinShow and reserve.
For the pet class, the criteria is a little different and includes the judge looking at the carrier the hamster is in so the owner should add items to demonstrate a knowledge of what a hamster should have in their main cage, a hide, bedding, substrate and food.

Hamsters in the main show are judged primarily on appearance and how well they conform to a specific standard. The things judges will look at include the colour and markings, the overall body shape and size, the fur quality and coverage and things like the positioning and size of the eyes and ears. Out of the possible 100 points, only 10 are allocated for condition which includes temperament as well as things like bites and length of toenails.

Show hamsters are often more laid back than their pet shop counterparts and are quite content to snooze the day away in a show pen and most exhibitors wouldn’t bring a hamster that wasn’t happy with this.
