Question Quigley: Show Ham?

Was wondering whether someone could tell me if Quigley has any potential as a show hamster? He was bred by Palmer-Stephenson, who show a lot of hamsters, but I suppose since they chose to sell him they can't have thought him show worthy!

He will be 8 weeks old on Sunday, so it may still be a bit early to tell if he will be any good.

Also, at what age do you usually begin to show a hamster?

There are lots more pictures on his thread. But, here are some from the last week.

A breeder will make what they feel is the best decision about who to keep from litters but they can only go on what they see at the time and sometimes as hamsters grow, one that doesn't look too promising ends up blossoming into a nice show hamster.

Different judges will notice different things about a hamster and will mark accordingly so there's no reason to say that because a hamster doesn't place on one occasion, it doesn't mean that they're not going to place in another show.

James went from being a Reserve Best in Show to having two non-placing shows in a row just before I retired him whereas Matthew went from being fairly average in one show to Reserve Best in Show on his next so you never know if yours is going to have what it takes to pip the others to the post.

Syrians can be shown from eight weeks onwards and are eligible for the 'Young Stock' class until they're 16 weeks old. Some very young hamsters can find a busy show a bit overwhelming but others seem to cope with it quite well.

I think Quigley is stunning and should win lots of rosettes. I know that doesn't really help you but I just wanted to give my unprofessional opinion in

Haha thanks BP I agree, of course. He will always be "Best in Show" to me, whether he is show-worthy or not!

Fluffagrams 8 weeks old, huh? Quigley will be 10 weeks old the day before the Bath show on the 17th of July. Maybe I could enter him in the young stock class. That's only if he shows any potential, though. I don't think it would be fair on him to drag him all that way if he didn't stand a chance!

As far as I know, breeders mostly choose hammies not only based on their show perspective but on their breeding potential as well. For example, our breeder has hammies that she doesn't show but does use for breeding due to their good genes.
Breeders' hamsters are all usually of very good quality and they can't keep them all. Another example is my dad's dog. He is from a very good breeder and himself has so much show potential that the breeder continuously tries to persuade my dad to show him, but my dad doesn't like showing. Also, Marti's breeder wants me to show her, which I might do.
Basically, when it comes to breeders, they have to choose only exceptional ones both for showing and breeding, otherwise they will not be selling anyone. But what a breeder deems exceptional, is not what a judge might. I've heard that even pet shop hamsters have won shows. Your Quigley is a beauty, I would definitely show him.

Thanks Burakki. I agree with Marti's breeder that you should show her! Haven't had any 'professional' opinions on whether Quigley would be show-able. Think I'd like to get a Syrian judge or breeder's opinion on it first, but if they said he had a shot then I think I would give it a go with him.

I have no idea about showing but it might be fun and you could always put him in the pet class first time round or something. You'll get feedback from showing anyway.

That is true, Serendipity. We could try out the pet class! I would be interested to know whether it would be worth entering him in the main show, but perhaps it's hard to tell from a photo.

You could always his breeder for an opinion based on the photos of Quigley. Also Bath may be quite a big show. Real London -Bracknell - in September is probably smaller for hamsters. Both have a pet section and breeder hams are entered there too.

As I said I don't know anything about showing It might be that with him being a pedigree from a breeder you would rather try him in a show class than the pet class. I guess the only way to know is to try And get some feedback.
