Default Hamster Show advice

So we are having our first hamster show in NI for the first time in many years and I am taking Rosie my dwarf. I am really looking forward to it and am hoping to get involved. It is an hour travel and I am really worried because I have the show cage at home with me and have been putting Rosie in it for a few mins each night to get her used to it before the show. And it's going awful. She is bar chewing like mad and it's so hard to watch I put her in it for 10 mins one night then 15 and then last night 20 but it's awful, it's not like her at all and Im beginning to get worried about her being in it all day as it will be a long day for us. I don't want her to damage her teeth either. I don't want to be worrying all day about her at the show and won't enjoy the day and I don't want her to freak out completely and her amazing wee confident character and temperament ruined. I feel so cruel to her I'm beginning to think I can't take her as it would upset me to see her be so agitated. I know the Syrians chew a bit and then sleep but Rosie I feel won't do this any time soon, what should I do? I'm feeling quite anxious now about it

Try not to worry too much, I know it's hard but they really do settle down eventually.
My Chinese go into their show pens just before I leave for a show and it's not uncommon for one or 2 of them to chew for at least half the drive to a show but they soon settle down either part way through the journey or once they're on the bench.
Bear in mind with your little Rosie, she's at home and you're there with her when you're trying to acclimatise her to the show cage so she's probably going crazy wondering why she's cooped up in a small space in such a familiar environment.
None of my Chinese spend times in their show pens apart from during the travelling and the show itself and, as I say, they tend to settle down fairly soon. I'd imagine that whilst you're travelling, and at the show itself, she will soon settle down so pleas try not to worry
When you go to the show and have her in the show cage, try not to keep going back to her, leave her to settle and enjoy the show as best you can.
First shows are always nerve-wracking but I'm sure you and Rosie will do great

Thankyou Ghostsinsnow, that's really helpful advice and encouraging for me to hear. Very true about being in a familiar environment while in the cage, I never would have thought of that. I think now she has been in it a few times il leave it now to the morning of the show. Will have to get bits and pieces organized to take and get some cucumber too. I'm also going to be doing show steward so I am looking forward to the day. Feeling a bit more relaxed about it now, thanks for your help

Good luck with the show stewarding! It's a lot of fun and you learn a lot too! Trust me when I say you won't have time to worry about your little one if you're stewarding
I'm glad I could help, don't forget to let us know how you get on

Thanks! As you say it's good to start with as you learn loads from watching the judging and learning the different colours and standards for each. I had a practice a while back at judging some Syrians and did quite well against the standards which I was surprised about! Lol. Im looking forward to it. Never been to an actual show so don't know what to expect but from hearing you all talk of shows and doing a little research into it myself I've a bit of an idea. Any tips or info that anyone has that might be of use about anything show related would be very welcome! I am laughing though at the thought of seeing Rosie judged and having to let on she isn't mine! Hope she behaves which I'm sure she will she is a real sweetheart. Will let you know how it goes! 2 days to go!

Show went well, really enjoyed doing show steward and learning the standards. A few people came but will take a while for word to spread and people to become more involved. Funny story: a day or two before the show it came to me that when I got my dwarf I took it for granted that it was a she, and I never really checked. Which was bad. As the girl or pet shop probably wouldn't really know and can often get it wrong. So having actually checked (raging with myself that I never did) I have a male dwarf and not a female who I renamed Alfie. This was good I came to this conclusion rather than it being brought to light at the show lol. I couldn't believe it lol. Alfie did really well and was really pleased with him. Car journey went well a little bit of chewing the bars of the show pen and then settled. Slept most of the time at the show waking up now and again. He was the only dwarf there so needless to say we won first in the class lol! And received a lovely rosette (He endeared himself to the Judge and everyone thought he was a lovely boy and prob would have won even if he wasn't the only dwarf )

Congratulations on Alfie winning! Don't worry about the gender thing, even the best owners get it wrong (just look at ErinsAnimals Potassium), but it is always funny when it happens .

Thanks ! sorry I can't post pics, I used to be able to from my phone but now it's not working as pics are all too big. Need to figure out a way to make them smaller but haven't found a good free app yet that is simple to use. Any ideas? I asked before but the ones suggested I couldn't get to work.
