I tried Gertie, Rory and Rodney to get a photo but not one of them would sit still or even hang around for long enough. Didn't even try Clive who's all over the place at the best of times. Jack was my last hope and the only one who could be bribed with treats.
Personally, i think there should be a freestyle theme now and again to give everybody a chance to enter.

The trouble is there is Ria - you can't get anything easier than 'a favourite hamster photo' or sleeping hamsters or eating food surely?
I think we may well stop the choosing of the theme by the winner and have each competition as just a free choice. That way all can enter.

An alternative would be for the winner to suggest a theme as an option to run alongside a free choice.
It would be interesting to see which option people would take.
You could also give people an ultimatum of, let's say, 3 entries minimum or it's not going to happen in future.
It's extra work for you and if people want this competition to continue, they need to make an effort (not my original choice of words).

We have many lovely pictures of our past hamsters - but none that ever seem to fit the theme.
Hopefully when we get our next baby we will be able to enter.

Re: Hamster of the Month - June 2022 POLL NOW ADDED
Congratulations Wednesday, and your expert photographer Souffle. I really hope the competitions continue as I so enjoy seeing everyone's photos. I just lose track of the days and forget to enter my own! I do enjoy seeing (and having a go at) the themed ones but I do appreciate they can be harder to photograph for people. It would be nice to maybe see a seasonal themed one occasionally, such as easter/christmas/halloween and maybe more general ones in between, such as hamsters eating or your favourite picture of a hamster/favourite new picture of your hamster. I hope they continue, its a lot of fun.

you could always keep it really simple and say syrian hamster photos one month then dwarf/robo pic then next all species and just alternate between the three??? or something similar

Re: Hamster of the Month - June 2022 POLL NOW ADDED
I think maybe it was just an unusual theme this month I didn't even know much about the jubilee holiday days till a couple of weeks before. Also the Johnny Depp trial was being televised! Perhaps a big distraction. Or maybe just some people anti monarchy ha ha.
I think themes are good though as it gives people an idea for photographs and some can still be very simple if props are an issue. Just wondered though if an "ongoing" theme might be an idea? Obviously seasons can be an ongoing theme, but maybe something else? Like a few months of colour themes? (red theme, blue theme, silver theme etc) or a few months of "activity" themes - to include eating, sleeping, wheeling, general play time etc. And maybe one theme a year where photoshop things are allowed - just for fun.

Re: Hamster of the Month - June 2022 POLL NOW ADDED
I'm really curious now what July 2022 will be. Theme or no theme, props or sets required or not, free choice, photo of a certain species perhaps, who knows but souffle who so kindly organizes the competition.

Only problem with that might be, there may be even less entries. For example I couldn't enter every month if I only have a Syrian . And robos are hard to photograph! The more hamsters and photos the better! But I see the point. I think the idea of a theme is so we get different kinds of photos every month.
Some themes are always easier than others and have more scope. You don't always need a lot of props though.
