Default Are dirty paws a bad sign?

I’ve been looking at hamsters up for adoption and one of them looks young and small but its front paws are a little dirty. Is this a sign of some illness or can that just happen sometimes?

I’ve never seen any of my hamsters with their paws dirty

What do mean by dirty paws? Muddy looking from substrate as coco fibre can cause paws to get dirty or do you mean it looks like dried nasal discharge/snot - as this could potentially be a sign of a respiratory issue.
