Default Female Syrian Hamster, swollen and bleeding privates

Hi,

Been a few years since I last posted in here but I went to feed my 22 month old Syrian hamster Yuuko not long ago and noticed blood around her mouth. I though it might be sore nose so went to check but when I got her out I noticed her privates were extremely swollen and bloody. It doesn't look like it's currently bleeding but extremely alarming. I called the emergency vet as it's 4am here, but their exotic vet is unavailable and their best advice was to monitor the situation and book an appointment on Monday.

She is still very active and seems content, continuing to eat and drink. But I thought I would seek advice here so if I need to push for an earlier appointment, I can. I'll look into how I can upload an image here in case it helps.

Any bleeding from the vents is a matter of urgency. Is there any other vets you could contact?
Is there a smell to the discharge which might indicate a womb infection (pyometra)
Can you see and cuts on her underside? Is anything protruding or hanging out?

I'm not seeing any pus, but lightly cleaned it (I wanted to be sure not to hurt her so didn't press too hard) and to be honest she didn't seem all that bothered by it. But it is gaping open.

When I got home from work just now I gave her cage a thorough clean but didn't see any signs of blood or anything like that, although her droppings looked considerably bigger. I gave her another check and clean but all signs of blood are gone now - there is a little bit of poop stuck in there but she started wriggling and getting panicked so I had to leave that (for now) and if she doesn't get it out herself, I'll try again. Her behaviour is still pretty normal.

Are anal fissures a thing in hamsters?

Okay just been to the vet, its an ulcerated tumour between her vagina and anus. They said because of its location and her age they can't operate so advised regular cleaning and pain medication to ensure quality of life for now, but if/when she deteriorates they recommend taking her in.

Oh bless that doesn't sound nice. I hope she has some comfortable time left with you but I'd let her go peacefully as soon as you detect any change. I'm glad you took her in.

She's still quite energetic right now. Not eating her nuggets as much lately but seems to love cauliflower as I put a bit of that, a bit of broccoli and a bit of carrot in and she always takes the cauliflower so just making sure to give her a bit of veg each day and try to squeeze some juice onto the nuggets. It does look like the tumour has grown outwards a bit but it's not affecting her behaviour at the moment, and she adores the painkiller medication. At first I had to pick her up to get her to take it but now I can just stick the syringe through the bars and she comes running to lap it up - even tries to yank the syringe out of my hand and steal it. When I get her out to let her run around I have a special blanket for her to run on so she doesn't get anything caught on her wounded area after I've cleaned it.

Important thing is she still seems very happy and active and once that stops I will make preparations with the vet.

Just an update, probably going to book a vet appointment in the morning (nearly 11pm here so not much I can do right now). While she's still moving about she is definitely slower and has suddenly got a lot scruffier in the space of a day. She looked really dirty around her face and front paws, and her belly looks almost like she's been either shedding fur or pulling it out as she looks almost bald on her belly now. She also looks a lot duller in one eye, almost like it's a doll's eye. It doesn't have the brightness in it that it used to.

I just gave her cage a clean and when I went to pick her up to put her back she properly bit me pretty hard, which she has never done to me before, not even when she was a baby. I can only imagine it's because of the pain she's in despite her medication and I must have touched a particularly sensitive spot. I quickly put her back in her cage so I didn't get blood everywhere and cleaned myself up afterwards.

If I can get a same day appointment for Yuuko then I'll take her in tomorrow and get their professional opinion on whether or not she's well enough to take home for a little while longer, or if the more humane thing is to leave her with them right there and then. I feel like they'll be better placed to know what the best course of action because it's not a decision I want to have to make.
