Gregory - White scales on skin and fur loss
Hi all,
I知 hoping that you might be able to give me some advice. I値l start off by saying that I have consulted a vet and my Syrian hamster Gregory has been given a course of antibiotics for 10 days and anti parasite treatment, but I just want to make sure I知 doing the best I can at home to make him comfortable.
I致e had Gregory since October when I adopted him from a local rescue. Gregory was taken to the vets with a lump by his previous owners. His lump was removed and found to be benign, but his owners no longer wanted him. So in I stepped!
Gregory has been absolutely fine health wise since then, until very recently. I noticed that his ears were a little dry but I wasn稚 overly worried. Then on Monday I took him out of his cage to clean it out and was horrified to see that he had developed a thick white crusty scale on his back and was missing quite a lot of fur. This literally developed in less than a week, I had not taken him out of his cage for a little while because I壇 been extremely busy. I felt so upset and guilty to see him this way as he seemed incredibly itchy. I suspected mites so I cleaned his cage extremely throughly and called the vet the next day.
She gave him a course of treatment which is ongoing. She was hesitant to diagnose what it was as she said herself that she is not a hamster specialist, but suspected possibly mange or a skin infection. I知 worried about his skin being sore and scaly and his course of treatment isn稚 going to clear the discomfort up, although I hope it will cure the problem. I gave him a sand bath today to see if that would soothe him a bit and then applied some coconut oil on his back to hopefully relieve a little of the dryness. But I知 just not sure I知 doing the right thing. Are sand baths and coconut oil ok in his condition?
Any advice would be hugely appreciated and I知 thankful for all the help I can get!
Thank you so much,
Gregory and his mum Cassie
