was there something we could have done?

sadly last night when our syrian was out exploring our apartment she was able to climb up against a bookshelf and into our Roborovski's cage.

we heard her scream and rushed to her within seconds and separated them, a few minutes later our Roborovski (Lola) stopped breathing in our hands.

was there anything we could have done differently to save her after the fight? we both are suffering mentally right now and beating ourselves up over it. Our hearts are broken. I just need to know if there was anything we could have done to save her.

Sorry about your loss. You would have probably put a lid on your hamster cages. You can DIY a mesh-wire lid for your bin cages or buy one of those Exo Terra Screens from Amazon if you are using an aquarium.

Not only safe from accidents like this but also to protect them against other animals, like cats, dogs, and even rats.

If the hamster passed away so soon after the fight, I don’t think there was anything you could’ve done at that point. It’s just a matter of learning from the accident and making sure any cages are secure in the future.

Accidents happen even with the most loving of pet owners sometimes. A childhood friend of mine also lost a hamster to another pet after it escaped its cage.

I think it’s best to just move on, learn from the mistake, and remember and appreciate the time you shared with the hamster that’s passed on

thank you very much Lemon, a lot has been learned from it. hopefully this thread helps someone else prevent the same thing, Syrians are insanely good climbers storage box cages even if theyre really deep need a venting lid

Please be aware that your Syrian hamster is at risk as well. It is not safe to leave hamsters unsupervised when out freeroaming. Hamsters are reckless and will climb but they will also jump from great heights. They are not good at climbing down and sometimes let themselves drop.

You know now that every hamster cage needs a secure and well ventilated lid. I would also strongly advise you to hamster proof your Syrian's freeroaming area to protect her from harm and yourself from further heartache.
