what's wrong with 2 year old hamster?

My hamster (syrian) is 2 yrs 2 mths and has been slowing down but yesterday he was consantly squeaking quietly all the time as he slept and seems very tired. Today when I looked at him I thought he was dead but he then moved . He is just very tired and spends a lot of time in his nest although he is still eating and drinking. I thought he might have a respiratory infection so phoned the vet but they weren't much help unless I took him in. I didn't as I didn't want to disturb him and they wouldn't do anything over the phone. I'm due to go to hospital in 4 days and will be in over a week but someone will be coming in every day to see to him. Don't know if I should cancel my operation to stay with him in case he's dying.
