Default Johnson’s Tea Tree Skin Cream for rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, etc.

My Syrian, Willis, has unfortunately been poorly over the weekend.

I took him to the Vets I work at yesterday for an exam and an ultrasound (perks of the job, lol) for which I had to clip his tummy for.

As his fur begins to regrow his skin will be quite itchy, so I bought some cream from Pets at Home in the hopes it’ll soothe it.

Obviously I’d only be applying it topically but I’m thinking if he were to clean himself and ingest some, I don’t want it to give him a bad(der) tummy. Has anyone used it on their hammy before?

Pics of the cream and my poor baby’s nakey tummy for reference (please disregard my shocking clip patch, he’s a wriggle bum lol)

I'd probably not use this. I've had a few hamsters had ops and they have never has any itching of the shaved area so hopefully your little one won't have a problem.
I have however used the cream on a hamster with dry ears but it wasn't an area he could lick and only a tiny smear massaged in.

I wouldn't use the cream at all. Tea trea is extremely toxic to pretty much any animal particularly the essential oil form which is included in that. It also contains lavender which is known to cause neurological issues in other rodents as well as being an irritant in general.

If you absolutely needed to use something topical I would lean towards either fresh aloe if you can get that(DIY straight from the plant to avoid additives etc) or a plain high quality coconut oil in a very small amount, just enough to moisturize that's quickly absorbed. You don't want to feel a greasy residue once it's properly rubbed in if you're using a good oil - that's generally a sign you've used too much!

For overall skin and coat health it's always a good idea to add natural sources of healthy fats to the diet if you don't already. Flax seed is a good staple for this but it's good for the diet to have variety in general with all different kinds of safe seeds & nuts since you can get different benefits from different ones.

Ok, that’s reassuring - in that case I won’t use anything unless it actually becomes an issue. Thank you!

Thank you so much! To be honest, generally I don’t intervene with this kind of stuff especially in the case of maybes but I’ve been in crazy hamster mum mode for the last few days lol

I completely understand, I think we've probably all been there at some point in different ways whether it's with hamsters or other pets!
