Default Snowpea and her booty

Hi,

Recently for the past few weeks, Snowpea has had a bit of a poopy bottom going on. I don't see actual diarrhea in her bin, though.

A week ago I gave her a full bedding clean so i could look at her nest bedding, and I didn't see anything wrong there either. The day after the clean, her booty (what i call her potty area under her tail) was all clean again. Though she's starting to let it get poopy again-- She left really small poopy marks on my bed last night

As for behavior, she seems to be the same as always! The one difference I noticed is that she's been chewing/gnawing on my bed/trying to pull my sheets or something. I think though that she thinks my bed is also a nest, and she's trying to make it more nest-y or something? (She's a very smart little girl, so I wouldn't put it past her to be like "Mumma, ur bed is incorrect! I fix!" ) I've been pointing to her nest, going "Snowpea nest." while she's out, and then pointing to my bed and going "Mumma nest."

Given her behavior hasn't changed and there's not much else of any concern, would this just be a dietary thing? Should I stop giving her treats for a lil while and see if it clears up?
100% willing to take her to the vet if needed-- I have a great one that's helped in the past with other hams.

Her diet consists of Higgins Vita Garden Hamster & Gerbil Food, Sunseed Critter Cubes, the occasional love duck, a gerber puff or two, and some freeze dried chicken treats! (She hasn't gotten any recently because I ran out )
I do plan on switching the cubes part of her diet to the Mazuri one I see people talk about a lot-- My local petsmart just started carrying it :0

Snowpea is approximately 22 months-- Her birthday is sometime in April (around the 15th lol), and she's still sprinting like a marathon runner in her wheel. She has started sleeping a little bit more, but the moment the lights are out she's up and running.

I would ditch the cubes entirely and not use the Mazuri ones either. Neither are going to be high quality in terms of ingredients and ultimately aren't a good source of animal protein while the freeze dried chicken you already give is an ideal source!

If you give any sort of fresh veggies, those can sometimes cause digestive upset in hamsters especially in large amounts. Sometimes they can have issues with newly introduced fresh foods, particularly in large amounts. In other cases there are some hamsters that just seem to get an upset stomach from specific veggies while being completely fine with others.

Other than fresh foods potentially causing digestive upset, some hamsters will benefit from extras in their diet that provide healthy sources of fiber - plain oats for example or a little canned plain pureed pumpkin. Brown flax seed is also a great dietary addition for other benefits but it would add a little fiber too.

Good to know! I used to browse a different hamster community forum (closed down now), and i read that the food I have for her needed to be supplemented with cubes or something in order to meet the protein intake needs for hams-- but if the chicken fills that part, then would it be better to give that to her more often? She usually gets a small chunk of the chicken every week or two right now.

Daily freeze dried chicken is a good idea. You could also rotate that out with the occasional piece of plain boiled egg or similar high quality animal protein if you wanted.

Will do!

I have a small happy update on her!

Last night, her booty was clean again! I think cleaning her nest helped in some way she was also very very happy and cuddly too. very much wanted attention from my mum and I.
She woke up sometime yesterday to get some food, and was trying to get her small alligator whimzee into her nest but couldn't get it past her wheel-- I helped her, and she crawled into her nest to drag it in a moment later. She was so happy that she squeaked a few times (something she's always done when happy! She huffs when she's not )

Tonight she seems to be in the same good mood-- Just had her out and her booty is looking clean still which is a relief. Still definitely gonna monitor her.
