Exclamation Vaginal Discharge

Hello all,

I'm seeking advice and opinions. My elderly hybrid dwarf hamster Egg showed a little vaginal discharge on Monday night when I was giving her a health check. It wasn't a lot and it didn't smell, but I've never noticed discharge from her before, so it worried me a little though I was hoping it was just that she was in heat.

Yesterday, it had mostly cleared up, but there was still a little dried discharge -- again, something I've never noticed around her vaginal area before. She's mostly the same today, though there were also one or two dark flecks around the area.

It still doesn't smell and it's not a lot and it's mostly dried and it's not a worrisome color, but I just wanted to get some outside perspective since it's unusual for her. Honestly, my worst fear in regards to my female hams has always been pyometra, so I'm a little more worried about it than I otherwise would be, probably.

Normally, I would just take her to the vet to put my fears in check and get an expert opinion, but my normal vet is absolutely swamped the last few months. I had to take Egg to the emergency vet two months ago just for a simple eye injury because there were no other options. It was very expensive and stressful for all of us (the ER vet is almost two hours away). Every other vet in the area who sees hamsters won't see us because we're not established patients, so I'm sort of stuck.

Which is why I'm seeking other opinions as to whether this is something to worry about. Thanks in advance.

Default Re: Vaginal Discharge

A little bit occasionally is normal because hamsters go through times that would be their breeding time

I wouldn’t worry too much unless it looks like a lot, it continues for more than a few days, or if your hamster starts to act sick. If you can’t get to your regular vet, I would just watch Egg closely and make sure she seems ok for the next few days
