Default Watery urine

I’ve noticed my hamster Icy’s urine today was way more watery than usual and it seemed like a lot of it (she is 2 years and 2 months old)

I earlier mentioned she’s had abdominal swelling (which keeps increasing unfortunately)

Neither of the vets I saw know what to do at the moment and I’m so worried of giving her the wrong treatment

She’s still on antibiotics and I’m afraid that if it’s pyometra then she’ll get really bad if I stop them. But now I’m afraid maybe kidney problems because of the urine? She has some kind of discharge now but I’m not sure if it’s a uterine thing or if maybe she can’t reach around to clean herself as well anymore

Otherwise she was still very active today and seemed happy and like herself and is very willing to eat and come out to visit me every day

I don’t know whether to try to treat for pyometra or kidney problems or something else entirely, but both vets told me I can ask for different medicine at any time

She means so much to me and I’m afraid of accidentally making things worse

My 2yr 5mths old Syrian pees and drinks a lot now which is common in elderly hamsters apparently because organs like the kidneys are starting to fail.

He does not have any swelling but if he had it would also worry me.

Have the vets never suggested an ultrasound scan to find out what's going on or do they think the aneasthesia would be too risky at her age?

They have not suggested an ultrasound or any other actual physical test, but they didn’t tell me why

Maybe it’s because she’s old

I have another appointment next Wednesday but I’m worried about her declining more until then

Hi Lemon, I’m unable to give any advice as I’ve no knowledge of elderly hamsters, but I hope Icy gets better, your clearly doing everything you can to help her, such a difficult time when our pets enter their older years.

Thank you all for your advice

Today her urine looked almost green which I couldn’t find anything online about, and sort of orange tinted in some areas so I’m worried about blood or something else

She didn’t get up to play today as far as I noticed, but she was still happy to eat and drink

I’m worried it just may be nearing her time to go, but I’m still keeping her vet appointment in case

At this point I don’t know if antibiotics will make things better or worse

I'd keep the vets appointment. If the green urine turns out to be puss and the swelling gets worse the antibiotics don't seem to be helping enough to make her better and it may be kinder to help her on her way to avoid things getting worse.

I don't think antibiotics would make things worse but is taking them distressing for her? Is Icy sleeping a lot?

The appointment is still scheduled

For the most part, icy has been just as active and playful as usual, but I’ll have to see what happens today

She has not shown any aggression towards me either

to be honest, I have no idea how long her urine has looked like this because i usually don’t get to see it because she goes on her bedding and it gets absorbed. But it does seem darker than usual I think

I’m just scared with baytril because I saw so many warnings about not giving it to animals with kidney or liver problems, which she might have. She is actually very happy about taking it though, because i mix it with peanut butter and she gets excited about it. But I do feel really bad when I have to wake her up for it sometimes

I didn't know that about baytril and thought it was metacam that could affect kidneys when given longterm.

So, vets must prescribe a different antibitic then for hamsters with a kidney infection but they prescribe it for a uti.

See what the vet says.

Ok so thankfully I noticed today that there was some pure blue fluid near icy’s urine corner and I think her bedding released some blue dye from getting wet, which could’ve been what made it green

She came out to play today and was happy and ate and drank like normal

I’ll definitely ask the vet about the antibiotics though, and about the swelling and why her urine is so watery

I'm glad to hear that Icy is well enough to come out and play.
The dye in hamster bedding shouldn't start to run when wet.
I much prefer natural or coloured substrate but changed to white Kaytee clean and cozy for the very reason that it shows up abnormalities like blood, discoloured urine etc.
